High-Level Brake Light Bulbs

Post by CitroJim »

My Activa is due its MOT next week (well not until the end of October but I'll take it a month early) and I notice one of the bulbs is blown in the high-level brake light (the one in the boot lid).

Is it an MOT failure?

How do you open the light to replace the bulbs and what sort of bulbs are they?

A brief look has not revealed how to get into it :?

Don't do as the handbook suggests and try levering it out from the outside as you'll break it. The way to get to the bulbs is to open the boot then look for a rubber plug behind the light, remove it then use a long screwdriver or socket extension to apply pressure to the spring clip to release it outwards.

IIRC the bulbs are 5w capless.

Judging by the amount of Rovers flying around with between 5 and 1 working bulbs in the high level brake light, it won't be an issue....

I think the MOT lighting rule is... if it's fitted, it must work (except front fogs or other accessory lights that is)

According to MOTuk.co.uk, from the Tester's manual:

"High level stop lamps

These are lamps usually fitted in the rear window or boot spoiler of a vehicle and may consist of a number of light sources .
The lamp is one unit, so as long as at least one of the light sources illuminates when the brake pedal is pressed the lamp is deemed to be working"

No bother then

The bulbs are large capless 501.

Easy to change so just as well have it working!!!

As said, go from the inside.

Regards
Slim.

According to the BOL;

1.Open the tailgate
2.Push the clip & open flap covering rear of light unit
3.Disconnect wiring plug(s) then depress two retaining tabs & withdraw bulbholder

For the facelift, the BoL is just that, a liar

There is no flap and it's a case of removing the complete inner cover :x

On my V6 facelift you can simply remove the rubber grommit above the trim.

I looked behind that gromment Richard. If I had foot-long fingers I may have got to the light   All I succeeded in doing was cutting my finger on the sharp edge
