Veg and direct injection = dead car
Cheapest alternate fuel would be to find a free source of waste vegetable oil from a restaurant or chipshop and refine it into biodiesel.
Got to love those modern environmentally friendly diesels right?

Thats a shame. Quite fancied joinging in with everyone else and buying large amounts of cooking oil.
And the cost of course.

You can put small amounts of SVO into the tank with no problems, but limit it to perhaps 4 litres per tank full. Actually I have added 3 litres to a half tank and had no problems. (2 litre HDI with FAP).
Not going to save you a fortune though, but then they have added 5% biodiesel to normal fuel in France and Germany, and said it is the equivalent of taking quite a large number of cars off the road. Thus if everyong added 5% veggie to their diesel, it would amount to the same here.

Proper Citroen? That would be an XM then? Or a DS.Xac wrote:Sell your C5, buy a proper citroen diesel and take the missus on a holiday
We've just been on honeymoon, she doesn't need another holiday.

The other alternative is to go for an Elsbett two tank conversion. £836 as a kit including VAT and delivery
Biomotors website wrote:Unfortunately, not all vehicles can have a 1-tank system fitted. Kits saying "2-Tank" need a small starter tank in the boot for normal diesel, which is used until the engine is warm, when it switches to taking veg-oil from the main tank. You must remember to switch back to diesel about 3 miles before arriving at your final destination to ensure that the pump and injectors are clear of veg-oil, ready for cold starting the next day.

I always believed (but may be wrong) that the only reason not to use veg oil in a modern engine was that the exhaust gasses picked up by the management system detected the wrong gasses and shut the engine down for safety.
This happened when a mate of mine put a couple of gallons of petrol in a deisel car to a tank full of diesel, In a brand new deisel VW. He drove about 5 miles and the car just cut out and stopped, when we drained the fuel and put fresh deisel in the car, it started and ran perfect.
In an older diesel this would not have happened, in fact I used the the fuel in my old banger Xantia, Free fuel.

Slim.

I think you have to take it on individual meritBrian UK wrote:All that switching of fuel supply is asking for a problem. Do you always know that you are going to stop in three miles and will you always remember? And if you do lots of short journeys, it would be a total waste of money.

i believe the problem with high pressure DI engines isnot the fact that it's veggie oil, but that it's viscosity is different to dino, and all the elastic-trickery sensors and multi-nozzle injectors are designedaround the viscosity of pump diesel and they can't get the fuelling right with straight veggie.
There may be problems with seals as well, but it's the viscosity issue that's the main difficulty, which is why a system specific twin-tank set up is neccesary. Proper bio diesel however is no problem- I've used it in the Kia which also has the Bosch HDi system with no probs- too scared to bung svo in though, and it doesn't do enough miles to justify a twin-tank.

If this were me i would not put Veggie Oil in any HDI tank.
The High pressure and Computer Controlled Sensors really dont like this stuff sticking around, especially in Winter when it thickens.
My choice would be to purchase BIO-FUEL to save a few quid.
Just my Penny's worth

Life feels good just as you complete No4 Glow Plug on a ZX-TD
I've managed to find a place selling biodiesel at 74ppl which is not too bad, coupled with the higher mpg my HDI gives I'm happy. The seems to be loads of places producing biodiesel in the North West.citroenbx wrote:If this were me i would not put Veggie Oil in any HDI tank.
