Its about time you put the full model description of your new XM into your signature
If you cant find the filter the obvious places in the engine compartment, I'd had a look down under the rear near the tank.

Updated... i've had a look, and it is now where to be seen!! It's not a small filter (about the size of an oil filter), i've got the new one.

Has anyone got any ideas?? Sounds like it's WELL hidden under somewhere impossible which may explain why the car picked up some crap when it was kinda but not quite nearly empty. (2 notches up from empty)

I spent a good half hour under the car tonight. Andmcit gave some pointers over pm last night but i can't find it, he said it's behind the rear subframe.

Pictures would be great.

Put the arse of the car up on ramps or stands and if on ramps lower the rear so you don't get a surprise later.
Remove the spare wheel and remove the spare wheel cage (easier than it looks)
Laying on your back under the car, look up to the rear of the tank on the right side of the vehicle.
You will see a rubber thing that is retained by a large rubber band and hooks
Feel around this thing and you will feel the incoming and outgoing ends of the fuel line.
The filter is about the size of a baked bean can
Remove the rubber band thing and you will then have the filter and its rubber case loose.
Remove the fuel lines (try to ensure the system is depressurised first)
Remove the filter and case
Swap filters over ensuring you put the new one in the correct direction
Replacement is reversal of abov.

Should take you about 90mins.

Good luck.
