From what I've read on this forum, the turbo should outlast the engine, may I ask why your colleague needs one?

Bearing that in mind I'd say get a used one from a breakers yard or ebay etc.

I agree with mike, its very unusual for one to fail, unless its been run out of oil or something has been dropped down the air intake. I would be quite happy to get one from the scrapyard or from ebay.

It's totally had it - chugging loads of smoke, gutless to drive and very
loud turbo whine which all point to an open induction pipe BUT it's all
been checked and double checked AND also been diagnosed at a
Citroen Indy specialist too. Best price so far is £238 PLUS VAT exchange
for a recon unit...

Hiya. They're so reliable units, why don't you get one from a car in a scrap yard? Save loads of money.

Sounds like the exception! I have run about ten Citroen diesels over the last 20 years and covered total of around 500,000 miles, and I have never had a turbo fail! Sounds like something has got sucked into the inlet and damaged the blades.

Are the guys I used to get my replacement turbo from. Think it was £400 for a brand new one as I had no turbo to return due to mine swallowing some stuff (stupid garage).

For finding out the exact part numbers etc the catalogue on : here is pretty good. From memory they also offered a decent price but only on recon units which is why I didnt use them as I had nothing to return.

just seen this on fleabay

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/citroen-xantia-1- ... dZViewItem

says it has done 60000 miles seems like it could be worth throwing £30 at it if you can get any more info from the seller even better

THAT'S GREAT!! Thanks Colin!! Well spotted; I hadn't seen anything
apart from a brand new 2.1 one on ebay. I'll tell the guy I work with
to have a bid on it, especially as there seems to be a collective view
here that they don't normally 'go' bad...
