How fit manual starter light on BX's GTI instrument panel ?

Post by FrankBo »

Hi, Last July I repaired my BX 1600 91' after 3 years stop, and now it runs on the road again!

Last dicember i bought a manual conversion kit for my BX 1600 carby with auto choke, and i'll install it shortly.

I also bought a BX GTI's istrument panel from scrappy to replace original instrument panel and i whould connect starter light on GTI instrument panel, as in BX 11/14 (which have manual starter) my question is: GTI's instrument panel have e free light for manual starter i'll install?

I found a diesel light starter available on GTI's instrument panel, but my electrical specialist said me not possible use it and i need a free light as others lights i have now. (I can't translate electrical explanation, sorry) i have not electrical connections; i'll search it from a BX 11/14 into scrappy.

Can you help me? Thanks in advance

I think what you want is a choke warning light - ie a light that comes on when the manual choke control is operated.

If this is so you will need a switch operated by the choke control - there may already be one there.

The next stage is to choose which spare warning light you wish to use on the instrument panel - then work out which side of the bulb holder is earth (it will probably be shared with others) and which side is live. Trace the live side to its plug, making sure it isn't shared with anything else.

Now you need to connect to the live wire. You may be able to use the existing plug - in which case cut the wire to that terminal back some way and insulate the car side of it to prevent future problems. Then connect the stub left on the plug to a length of wire and run it to one side of the choke warning light switch.

You now need an ignition controlled feed. Choose your feed and connect a wire from it to the other side of the switch and you should have a working choke warning light.

You must work carefully, making all joints secure both mechanically and electrically and all new wiring should be fastened neatly in place - otherwise it'll work for a short time then fail or worse - set the car on fire.
