This sounds like sticky caliper slides.
There are two pins which the caliper slides on, the first is a thick pin at the top, with rubber boots on either end of it, this is the pin that the caliper pivots on when you remove the pads. The grease that lubricates the pin dries up, it needs to be removed and regreased periodically. The lower slide is the pin you knock out to change the pads. Where this goes through the caliper there is a stainless spring clip, corrosion gets in behind the stainless clip and makes it tight on the pin. The clip must be removed and the corrosion cleaned away periodically.
Typcially, if you've got a sticky slide, you'll also have juddery brakes.
