The Odometer button on my 1993 K-Reg ZX Volcane won't reset the odometer, it barely moves when pushed.
Has anyone ever attempted to fix one, and what is the likely cause ?

Hi Paul
This is a common problem, particularly on BX's and ZX's. Our ZX one was jammed when we sold it so not only could you not reset it but it also ticked annoyingly at speed!
The most common reason for this happening is when someone has attempted to reset it when the car is moving. They don't like it!
The one in my BX is still working, but even when stationary if the digits are a long way from zero you sometimes have to put a quite heavy, but constant pressure on it before the dials will start to move. Once they start moving you're almost gauranteed it will reset so keep your finger on it until it either resets or it's obvious that it doesn't want to know.
If it's really knackered then it's likely the reset knob has been damaged/bent or broken off completely. The only way to find out is to remove the speedo head from the dash, and either manually reset it and see if it works OK in the future if you use it carefully. If the damage is obvious then try finding one in a scrapyard that will reset and then swap just the trip bit over.
Hope that helps

Thanks for the prompt reply.
I have another problem with the speedo, below 40mph the speedo is very erratic with the needle swinging up/down.
Any suggestions ?
Cable linkage need oiling ?
I had it replaced at the dealership when I first had it but it gradually came back.

If it's anything like the BX speedo, then there's a little forked plastic component that engages on the tripmeter when you press the reset button.
If the forked section gets broken, then there's nothing to "catch" on a projection on the tripmeter dials, hence the lack of reset. I replaced mine on a BX with an undamaged part from another instrument assembly.
There have been a few posts recently about the "swinging speedo" on the BX technical forum, and the concencus is that this occurs when the cable isn't routed correctly, or is bent during the routing process. Some rhd Citroens have more awkward routes for the speedo cable than their lhd counterparts.

A swinging speedo needle can also be a sign that the cable drive to the gearbox is moving about due to wear in the gearbox final drive bearings, allowing the speedo drive pinion to move around. I have experienced this problem in Ford gearboxes as fitted to the Escort/orion where it would show the same symptoms. Obviously if your gearbox is quiet, the gears are easy to engage and it is not leaking oil everywhere then it is probably just the speedo cable/head. Another sign that the gearbox/final drive is worn is that the driveshaft oil seals leak even after replacement due to the fact that the inboard end of the driveshafts are moving about and displacing/wearing the oil seals prematurely

I'm certainly not getting oil leaks on the drive and my gearbox is quiet and smooth.
I guess that it may be worth me checking the cable routing and getting some oil into it.
It doesn't always misbehave, only sometimes which seems strange !
