Hi,
A simple question for someone.
Should the bellhousing on a Xantia 1.9td have a plug in the bottom? I am refering to the square hole through which the clutch can be seen.

Yes I believe the TD's should have the hole with a cap, as they have the famous pull-type clutch release bearing. The hole may then be used for retaining or locating the bearing correctly during a clutch fitting job.
I can see no other reason for the capped hole, as any oil leakage will find its way down the bottom anyway. Usually there is a slotted hole towards the engine sump exactly for discharging such leakage.
