Xantia Cambelt renewal

Post by soupy_sam »

At what mileage should I change my cambelt? I have Xantia 1.9TD 1995 I last changed belt at 146,831 my mileage is now 176,314.

I have changed oil and filters every 3000 miles and car runs very well.

Hi Sam -

I woldnt worry. A known history of 30Kmiles on a belt is in no way near the critical wear limit. You may as well postpone the job to approx 50K on the belt.

If you feel something has to be checked - then check the belt tension for peace of mind. It may in fact take a wee bit doing up.

Hi Anders,

Is the extended belt mileage on the HDi engines due to the fact that the belt gets a much easier life driving a straight HP pump rather than the mechanical timed (lumpy) pump?

It has never been extended from 30K to 50K ?
What wrong with a 50K wear limit ?

I understand that PSA are now scheduling belt changes at 100K km...

It was never 30K miles to my knowledge. 80K km was the norm for 205/405s etc. since God was a boy

Plenty if 100K is sufficient!

For the 2.0i 8 valve petrol Xantia the cambelt schedule is/was 74,000Km.

I did my belt at 145,000Km soon after getting the car, and boy did it need replacing, the base of every tooth was cracked, and the belt was quite feathered. It was in bad shape. Either it missed its first change (possible) or it really does need to be that often. The water pump was leaking too....

Simon

Well then - better save even more on the cam belt replacement cost. Thats an easy & safe off-loading of the budget.

Sam : according to Mr Lolingram the conclusion is then you dont need to bother with the cambelt the next 70K. Its better saving your precious money avoiding un-necessary cambelt replacements, as you will need a bit extra money for a new cylinderhead later on then.

With respect, that is not what I said, nor inferred if you re-read what I originally posted Anders. In effect I asked you if the increased mileage between belt changes (now confirmed by wheeler) viz:

"the 2.0 & 2.2 HDi t/belt changes are 100,000 miles
the 1.4 & 1.6 HDi belts are due at 150,000 miles
the 2.7 V6 HDi is due at 160,000 miles"

was due to the easier load on the belt not having to drive a 'notchy' pump (which you did not answer). If PSA say it is now 100k miles+, then there will be a saving compared to more frequent intervals. Clearly it is not a good idea to delay the change to the detriment of engine damage (which I was not encouraging).

I re-iterate the question as to whether the upgrade is due to an easier belt task, or some other reason such as improved belt quality, since if this is the case, it ought to apply accrosas the board.

I trust that this is now concise.
