The Pinto engine was fitted to early Mk3 Granadas. It went surprisingly well for such a large car but was unsurprisingly thirsty. Later Granadas had a DOHC version which was pretty economical. I drove one as a taxi and it wasn't too far behind the 1.9D 405s on long runs.
For economy you need an engine that's up to the job. The 1.9TD in the Xantia was barely up to it so it doesn't take much to hit the mpg.
Hooray for cooking oil

Especially true with the Xantia Estate. It is interesting to note that the similar powered (90hp) 2000cc HDi, has a much better comportment - especially at low rpm, and the fuel consumption is a no brainer - at least 5-6mpg to the good.
The 1.9XUD is bulletproof however!

Wikepedia has this to say about the Pinto engine:
The Pinto engine was available in displacements of 1.3 L, 1.6 L, 1.8 L and 2.0 L. Due to emission requirements it was phased out towards the end of the 1980s to be replaced by the CVH engine and DOHC engine, the latter being (contrary to popular belief) not a twin-cam development of the Pinto unit. The 16-valve version of the Ford DOHC unit is still used on the Ford Transit. The only DOHC direct derivative of Pinto engine is Cosworth YB 16-valve engine, powering Ford Sierra and Ford Escort RS Cosworth variants.
