Damper on 1.9 TD Accelerator cable

Post by Paul Thomas »

My 1993 K-Reg ZX Volcane 1.9TD has a damper fitted to the throttle body and attached to the accelerator cable.
Unfortunately this damper has stopped working and the accelerator cable keeps sticking and taking a long time for the pedal to return.
Consequently when changing gears it over-revs each time unless you dip the clutch and allow the accelerator cable 10secs to return to it's normal position before changing gear.
Has anybody else had this problem and what did you do to fix it ?
I have been quoted £113+vat just for the damper ! ! !

Even if the damper is removed, then the spring in the pump is enough to allow the the throttle cable to return.
Dave Burns of this forum tells me that he just removes the damper.
If you don't want to follow that route then we sell them here at Andyspares, new Bosch part is £49.50 and exactly what the dealer is charging you £113.oo for!!!! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

So maybe the problem isn't the damper then.
Could it be the spring in the pump that has gone, or perhaps the cable needs a bit of oil working down inside it ?
Is there a spring at the pedal end ?

Paul,
If you haven't already it is worth disconnecting the throttle cable from the pump to see if it runs free.
I've known them where the inner wire cable strands breagk up and cause sticking.
