Xantia 99 Automatic 1.9 TD

Post by jmd »

Having recently got the above car. I am at a loss as to the function of "sports Mode". Is one meant to drive in this mode always, or is it in order to go into this mode at for instance 50 MPH when intending to pass out other vehicles, or is it usual to drive in this mode always. Any advise appreciated. The manufacturers handbook that came with the car seems to be intended for an earlier model, which did not have those functions.

The later auto adaptive gearbox 'maps' it's changes in a more "boy racer"
styley when the sports setting is switched in the same way the gears
selected are more condusive to the conditions where the winter/snow
setting is switched in. All very clever stuff but I guess unless you're hooning
about the place on two tyres all the time it'll be fine in the normal mode!!

You can switch modes at any speed but it's not necessary to use it for overtaking, just boot it and the box will change down to the appropriate gear. If you drive in sport mode you will find the gearbox will want to stay in a lower gear for longer than is required for 'normal' driving and your fuel consumption will increase.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

Thanks for the advice Stempy & Andrew. I was a bit concerned as to whether I could change modes at any speed. I think I will abstain from "sports" mode. Fuel consumption has increased by about 5 to 7 Mpg with the 1.9 Td Automatic as against the 1.9Td manual
