Xantia brakes

Post by Joe Pineapples »

Hi folks. Does anyone know where (or if) I can get a hold of the anti-rattle shims from the front brake calipers on a Xantia (1997 TD)?
Cheers.

I think Halfords do them, or used to.
Never had the need of them myself.

I may be wrong but they don't have any! Usually the pads ahave a skim of copper grease on their backs and nothing more.

If they're rattling then you have a problem elseware. I'd say the handbrake adjustment mechanism was not working correctly or they're not assembled properly.

Essentially, the pads are kept in very close contact with the discs by the ratchet action of the handbrake adjustment mechanism which takes up any play. Maybe this mechanism is broken through someone not realising that the piston needs to be wound (rotated) back when replacing pads and not simply pushed back as in the case of conventional calipers. Undue force in trying to retract the piston in the conventional manner will wreck the helical screw.

How well does the handbrake work?

Also, it may be the rears making a racket. It is easy to confuse where the sound is coming from!

No, they are deffo missing. I only had one pair, they are in the nearside caliper. When you jack the car up, you can rattle the offside pair, but not the nearside pair, these wee clips hold them in place.

Trying to remember the fronts, but the backs have a bent clip that holds the pads in place, like a square U shape.

When did you last bleed the brakes?

Oh yes, of course!!! I was thinking of the old style anti-squeal shims that go between the pads and pistons.  Sorry.

You mean the big springy bits at the front :) As Xac says, Halfrauds may have them but they don't normally need replacing. Failing that, a scrap yard. A dealer will do them but I'll wager they'll be pricey!

I thought Joe was refering to those too.
My rear pads have them, but I've never seen a Xantia with them on the front.
So the only thing I could think of which stops the pads rattling (other than as you said, the piston itself) is the springy clip thing.

Blimey! They really are living up to their stealer's name!
Try going round to a scrappy, especially ones that let you take things off the cars yourself, as they'll probably let you have one for free.

Yeah, I was kind of expecting that the scrappy was my best option. Time to get my hands dirty.

You may find some of the specialist factors sell them - might be worth a browse in yellow pages.

The springs are part of the 'pads fitting kit' for the front.
Such a kit should be no more than approx £10 from the usual parts suppliers. One kit would cover both sides.

Try the usual places halfrauds, Eurocarparts, GSF, Buypartsby etc. etc.
