i seem to remember that someone brought out a 'proper' spanner to do this does anyone have a link to where i could get the tool?

Hi,
I did mine ad did similar to you, I bent a ring spanner to fit the glowplug. I was quite a simple though knuckle ripping job.

The name of the spanner you're looking for is called an 'Offset ring spanner' which should be available at any reasonable car accessory shop/Halfords etc.

They are sold as Glow Plug spanners but people on here who have used them don't seem that impressed IIRC. I've never used one.

Here's the one that Screwfix do but I think you'd get theme anywhere that sells tools.

That screwfix one wouldn't go anywhere near the plug behind the injection pump

Thread here about changing Xantia TD glowplugs: http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/v ... hp?t=20675

I've bought a nice set of really deep offset ring spanners from my local motor factors - I've still got to change the difficult one in our ZX

You know, you can actually turn the glowplug behind the pump by using
a normal flat spanner from the middle of the head's direction. The offset
ring 12mm from Halfords was handy to have to take the initial grip off it
and to tighten the new one in mind and it wasn't too hideous a price tag
at 3-4quid.

IIRC I need to thank Richard for his advice about cutting a slot in the feed
wire ring as this worked a treat - I'd never done this job before and it only
took about 30-40 minutes. Maybe I managed due to being properly
mentally prepared after reading every word on the subject here first!!

The job went OK with the only hassle when I dropped the old glow plug
down behind the alternator never to be seen again AND I did manage to
drop a new one wiggling it into the non space behind the pump although I
managed to retrieve that one!!

I also used a handy telescopic magnet that stopped any nut/washer going
'walkies' when undone. The new plugs made a fantastic/significant
improvement in the starting on my TD estate though - transformed it.
