Hello,
The rev counter has started to play up on my Mk2 Xantia, sometimes it goes to full scale deflection then goes back down to zero. Another symptom is that the engine is slightly noisier when the rev counter is not working. (louder diesel knock)
I have misplaced my Hanynes manual at the moment. Does anyone have any ideas?

Hi Howie,
Sounds like you're intermittently loosing your TDC sensor. This will account for the change in engine note because the ECU relies on it to help determine the timing.
Check wiring to the TDC sensor.
Is your "K" (Engine Management) light coming on at all when this problem is evident?

Never had the management light on just the change in engine tone.citrojim wrote:Hi Howie,

The TDC sensor is on the top side of the bellhousing right above the flywheel.
Its connector can get covered in grime so is well worth a check. I recall it has a yellow plug but I may be wrong on that one.

I've located it and will try to replace it tomorrow.

i have had this for a couple of years (and never managed to sort it out).....on mine the rev counter drops to nil, engine management light and glow plug light both come on and there is a clicking noise from the glovebox area
the car also loses most of its power (drives like a petrol with fouled plugs) usually happens if the engine is put under a lot of load (pulling away from a roundabout etc) but cures itself if you rev it hard..... if you dont rev it hard it just keeps doing it for ages
as its citroen dodgy wiring is my best guess
