XM Electric Window - Frosty Reception

Post by MooreStep »

Returning to my frost covered car at Gatwick airport carpark last week I made the mistake of attempting to operate the driver's electric window in order to feed the ticket machine. Result: a loud CLONK followed by lots of impotent whirring. Fortunately the frost held the window up while I drove home.
What part is it that breaks in such circumstances, and how big a hassle is it to repair?

on my bx it was the bottom rail that is fixed to the glass and supports the two upper bearings of the scissor arrangement that corroded, had to replace the galss from a scrapped car. This was prob an hours labour - just a straight swap. However, on an XM, and I have only knowledge of the facelift, the mechanism works with wires which eventually corrode and snap (like my fathers). The cheapest option is to find donor part from scrapped xm but you may find they too are all corroded in which case its a newey...don't know cost or complexit as me dad had it done at the dealer...
hope this helps a little

I can't help much either but the rear windows are connected to the guide rail by a plastic clip device. A friend had one break once when his window stuck and I don't think he bothered to fix it, just jammed the window closed. I suspect that something similar will be found at the front. I'll let you know soon, I have the opposite problem. My driver's window has just become very intermittent - lots of click, click but little whirr, whirr!

Thanks hippy and Zummerman! Hippy was right, the wire had snapped.
The breaker wants £20, is 40 miles away, can't guarantee the regulator is even still in the car, and of course it will probably be close to snapping its own wire ... so I have to decide if I will bother with a recovered item or just pay Citroen the £165 they demand for a new regulator.
I am told that Citroen will sell me a spare with non-compatible plugs, which I will have to change myself! Andyspares does not currently supply XM window regulators, although they appear on their price list. Apparently they are currently trying to source an alternative supplier, perhaps because of the compatibility issues.
I will keep this post up to date once I have solved the problem.

eurocarparts will do the assembly for about 60 quid on line-no disrespect to andyspares but i had the same problem and they had supply problems.

removing the name europarts from my last post isn't very helpful to the guy with the problem is it.

Thanks for the tip Marski. Unfortunately Citroen UK have already taken my money! If I find the plug doesn't fit I will return it and go to E u r o c a r p a r t s instead
I have just checked, and that company is currently quoting £111 incl. VAT and delivery for the part in question, which is still a lot less than Citroen UK!
... next day, and I have just told the Citroen dealers where to stick their regulator. The one they offered me didn't merely "have the wrong plug". It lacked the control unit that is supposed to be mounted on the motor, and also looked like it needed to be completely dismantled to swap over the metal mounting plate.
"You have to take it," cried the man at the parts counter "it must be the right one, it's the only one listed! And Citroen UK won't take it back!!" He went on, "It'll come out of my own pocket ... it's like talking to a brick wall talking to them ... moan, whine, squeak, etc". Poor chap has obviously never heard of the Sale of Goods Act. I left him crying into his cash register and realised that, if Citroen UK treats its franchisees like that, no owner they treat us like something unpleasant on their shoe.
So anyway, I have just ordered the regulator online from the aforementioned unmentionable competitor to Andyspares. I suspect I will receive exactly the same inadequate component I was offered by Citroen, but at least I will have saved £50 and will feel less angry at needing to rebuild it using the control unit and mounting plate from the old regulator. I will let you know, dear readers.
... next day (again) and I have now received the regulator from Eurothingy. Sure enough, it is the same stripped bare unit offered by Citroen but for £50 less. Has anyone reading this ever fitted one of these, including transfer of the old control box and mounting plate? If so, please advise any tips or tricks.

Rather than keep editing the same entry, I thought I'd start a fresh one for this latest update on the saga. I examined all sorts of swap overs to make a working regulator out of the old and new parts, but the new regulator supplied by E u r o c a r p a r t s (which is the same as that which Citroen tried to sell me) simply cannot be made to accept the old control box.
I am unwilling to accept the loss of the one-touch option that the control box provides, and hence I returned the regulator to Eurowhatsit, which they accepted with full refund and none of the histrionics performed by the Citroen dealer!
So now it is either back to the wreckers, or there is a vague possibility that Citroen-Andre in the Netherlands will be able to help. The latter are very obliging and promised to look into it for me, but even if they do source something, it may well be wrong-handed. Watch this space.

It's possible to replace just the wire. Takes some taking apart of the mechanism [:D] and lots of swearing and bare knuckles. However I did it to my drivers side window about 2 years and 60000 km ago and it still works fine (just bought some handbrake cable for a bike and had it fixed for 2 euros...)
I think you'll find the description somewhere on the forum
(if not I'll have to dig very deep and might remember)
