Would I do such a thing?

I believe owners should be encouraged to have the cambelt changed especially just 200 miles before they sell the car to me  .

Unless that is just for the labour, that came to £423 and the parts £469.50 on my car.

So what were the "parts" ? Timing belt, water pump, some idler wheels, and .......... ??

Seems very expensive to me.

This kind of talk is putting me off ever wanting to own a V6 Xantia.... :?

Last year i had both a Xantia V6 and an Activa at the age of 24 (yes the insurance, road tax and fuel did KILL ME).

I fully working Activa is a bit more fun round corners, but the V6 was exciting , loved the kickdown in sports mode, i really miss the V6 Auto  Was doing 120Mph once (on private land of course) floored it to overtake and the car dropped down to 3rd gear :P was a right beast! Really pulls when it gets to the top end of the rev's and keeps going, and like someone else said when you take it steady its so nice, its up to 50mph in a blink of an eye being gentle.

just to run along side this (but on the same lines)
Does anyone have any experiance of the C5 v6?
How much better if any is it with the later engine (more grunt) & later (supposedly smoother) Auto box?
Is there a noticeable difference between the v6 in the Xantia?

I am on the same route as Cypher.. LX 1.8 to 1998 V6

For the amount it cost me, £1000 i cant really justify £800 on a cambelt, so will do that myself soon ;) great..

will do plugs I think on the same month off work!

love the car, black electric leather, and all the extras I could want..
so relaxed and quite fun when I want it to be.

Auto box is fine except the odd occasion when it changes from 3 to 2, once a week or so, depending on how much throttle / or lack of - i have.

Also, when in 'normal' mode (with no little throttle), it can quickshift from 1 - 3 so soon that it almost is slugish, you want it too hold an extra 500 RPM i find..

I prefer downshifting manually when i need it to go, using the sport button, rather than waiting for kickdown..

will be very sad if it ever breaks, or i sell it :(

Exhaust Mid to Rear is £200 no matter where you go...

There was a post on here a whileback giving the info necessary to change the V6 cambelt. What a job! Apparently the cambelt is over 2m long and you can effectively stand inside it

The V6 doesn't produce much power for its size and complication then?

194 BHP from 2950cc is rather poor for a 16 valve engine - when if Peugeot had stuck to the output achieved by the BX 16 valve engine it would be somewhere round 248 BHP - so it would seem to be about 50 BHP down.

Personally if I was going to suffer that fuel consumption I'd prefer a Jaguar or BMW - I wonder how much it costs to change a cambelt on them?

Are you talking about the V6 in the Xantia? Which is 3.0 litres? And 24valves... 4 per cylinder? 4valves x 6cylinders = 24v

BMW's M50 engine produces 190bhp (ish ?) from a straight 6 24v. So the Xantia's V6 is quite normal and good. Maybe a bit uneconomical comapred to the BMW.

I have a soft spot for BMW's, the e30 325i can make 170bhp from the 12v 6cyl 2.5. But the 194bhp from the Xantia sounds exciting, if only it was rear wheel drive!!

Personally I didn't think Peugeogt wanted to achieve so much power in a racy engine for the V6 in the xantia, they probably wanted something smooth and quick.

I love the auto boxed merely for the kickdown features in them, and the sports mode sounds FUN!! Who wants a clutch... when fluid power can achieve it smoothly!

Hi Dei.

thats is something that annoys me with my xantia ;) I can drive a clutched car much much smoother :(

especially when pulling up.. naughty i know, but if i have passengers i sometimes put her in N and brake smoothly instead ;)

otherwise gearbox good ;)

Hi John,

Well yes, u can do that too...

So you say the autobox isn't so smooth? It's gotta smoother than my old bmw one. Who makes the boxes for the Xantia? Is it ZF? Which are supposed to be bullet proof if well looked after?

Anyway, i'm bored of manuals now, i want the 'fun' of an automatic with power and kickdown. Can you wheelspin in an auto, i never tried in the bmw incase i knackered the box, but i suppose you could have it in N at 4000rpm and then D it!!
