Xantia gearbox interchangeability.

Post by roscopervis »

I have a 1994 Xantia VSX 16v with the 150 bhp engine. Recently the clutch was changed (which turned out to be a complete nightmare and had the car off the road for over 5 months!!Not to mention costing a fortune).
Before the change the gearbox was always a bit notchy and sometimes crunched going into third but rarely. Since I have the new clutch it nearly always crunches when going from 4th to 3rd, if i change too slow then it wont go into gear. I am wondering how bad does this sound. Are there any easy fixes such as adding some slick 50 to the gearbox oil?
If it is a terminal problem are the gearboxes for the Xantia's interchangeable like the BX's were? Could I fit the box out of say a 2.1 TD which would probably be stronger and have longer gears as currently it only does 20mph to 1000rpm in top.
If I could change the box how bad a job is it?
Thanx in advance

Andrew,
The 2.1TD gearbox is listed as a different box in the haynes manual, so I would hazard a guess and say they are different, certainly one difference is that it uses cables between the gear lever and gearbox linkages instead of bits of metal with mini ball joints on either end - this may mean you'll have to change the gear lever and linkages also (if the gearbox itself fits that is) apart from that I can only say its a pretty nice box and the gear change is smooth and precise so if you intend to keep the vsx it may be worth investigating further.. either that or get a 2.1td!!

Um,
well, if after the new clutch was fitted the gearbox was worse (why did it take 5 months? its a 6.5 hr job?), then would it not suggest either clutch adjustment or gearbox oil level?
I'd certainly be inclined to check these 2 things first. If it is the box at fault, sounds like the 3 to 4th synchro on its way out, quite unusual unless mileage is very high.

The ML5T gearbox as fitted to the 2.1TD is also fitted to the Activa. Last Monday, I had one of the cables' break whilst driving through Accrington <img src=icon_smile_sad.gif border=0 align=middle>. good old Green Flag brought me home. I am now trying hard to find a replacement cable. One other major difference between the two gearboxes is that the ML5T has a hydraulic clutch actuating mechanism. I doubt that a gearbox swap would be a good idea.

I will check what you said. The mileage is 83000.
My car isn't in the Haynes manual, it seems to be very rare.
It took 5 months becasue Black Diamond clutches are rubbish!!! To save some money I got a friend of a friend to put in a Black Diamond clutch (he is a master tech at a Citroen garage). The time isn't listed in any book but at best with all the equipment and tools everyone I have spoken to says at least a 9 hour job. He did it over a weekend and when I got the car back the gears wouldn't change with the engine on (posted about this some time ago). By this time I had to save up to pay this guy to take the black diamond clutch out and give it back to me so I could send it back to where I bought it.
However the Royal mail 'lost' half of it in the post so I cant claim back any of the labour charges or for the clutch. I think the shop (Venom motorsport, Blackburn) may have just said that half if it fell out in the post so they wont have to pay out, but thats another story. That episode took a month. In the end a standard Citroen clutch went in. In the end it took five months.
It doesnt really have to be a 2.1 td, cos the 1.9 also has longer gears than the one in at the mo.
Any ideas of cost to sort out the box if it is a synchromesh problem??
