266 or 283 that is the question.
Right, i have a grinding coming from my front drivers side brake.
Been down to the local garage and had the wheel off to measure the brake disks as i need new disks and pads. and got told that my 1.9TD hatchback 1997 - 98 Xantia has 283 diameter brakes.
Anyway, headed off to my local supply store as they do them cheaper to see if he had any in stock, and got told that my car has the wrong Disks on it? He said that i should have 266mm on and not the 283, as the 283 are for a V6 xantia ?
So, have i got the wrong disks? should i really have the 266 on there, and would they even fit?

is the brake calliper different For the 283's ? as they also have diffrent brake pads. this is doing my head in. no one near me does 283's they all have 266
Tbh, I'm getting tired of my Xantia, its been one thing after another, and it seems a very expensive car to sort out so far. I got quoted £270 for the fronts, even though the parts only cost £38 for the pads and disks for the 266 and £68 for the 283's ?
Unfortunately I'm running on a budget now, so cant afford £270 or the lower quote i got of £180, as I've had to sort the car out this week with other things. and to top it off, i have the MOT coming up. Plus still need to sort out the back box on the exhaust.
I've never known such a expensive and down right frustrating car before.
Nothing is every simple with a Xantia.

Are you able to get to the parts place without your car?
I'd suggest taking off one of the discs and take it along with you buying whatever matches.
I changed the front discs and pads on my 1.9TD estate (sorry, if I had the reciept of box still I'd let you know their size).
It didn't take long to change mine, I had to drill off the holding screws and replace them with M6 countersunk ones (which needed shortening), and get the right size torx bit to take the calipers off, but the haynes manual covers it well.
Would save you the extautionate labour costs.
GSF's site gives N60116 as the part number for front discs for all Xantias except 16V/EST/2.1TD/HDI 110/V6 for £18.80+VAT each.

Our local car parts discount lists the 288mm discs for '99 on HDI's :
http://thansen.dk/product.asp?c=8544203 ... 1165781754
Its not only larger diameter 288, but the thickness is also larger as 28mm.
All other discs are the 266mm (20.4) or the 283/282.5 (22) diameters.
Note all discs are ventilated (except rears)

Well, the fronts are Vented, just got back from the Citroen stealer, and got a pair of front disks (283's) they are for the Xantia estate according to them, now i'm just waiting on brake pads
Disks cost me £65 for the pair from Citroen, as these were the cheapest near me. everyone else was asking over £70 for them.
Pads ain't to much of a problem, being only £16 from a different supplier
the £280 and £170. were quotes from Kwik fit and national tyres. for parts and labour.
If i had the tools id be doing it my self. but unfortunately i don't, so the next best option was to get the parts and see if i can get someone to fit them for me.
Only problem i have now, is because of the extra parts costs, because i have different disks. its left me with £20 to try and get someone to help fit them for me

I know Wellingborough, one my of gf's mates runs a pub there I think.
Trying to find out from her if I'm free on Monday as I still have the torx bit etc that I used when I changed my 1.9's front discs, if you fancy a hand doing them.
Are you aware that GSF have a branch in Northampton (apparently my closest branch)?
Their discs are cheaper as I said, so I don't know if you'd want to give them a bell, and see if you can return the stealer discs and save a bit of cash?

Blimey what a rip off... this must be one of the easier jobs to do on the Xantia. My Brembo discs and pads from GSF are brilliant and so cheap that there really is no excuse for having bad brakes.....
