Xantia Pipe Union Spanner Size.

Post by David W »

Got a height corrector to change but can't find the special spanner I've had for years... one with a slot for the pipe.

Anyway it never was marked with a size but I thought it an 8mm... very snug fit even on rusty unions. I've tried a couple of open ended spanners to judge the size and the unions on this Xantia corrector seem to be halfway between 7mm & 8mm.

Anyone remember what the actual size is?

Thanks,

David

Thanks Anders. Seems the car I'm doing at the moment has more rounded union nuts than usual. Think I may end up with the mole grips!

This is often a problem so I might get two spanners this time and close the jaws of one a fraction.

Some of the flare nuts on mine are nearly round. I undo them with a Aston super wrench.

I also bought a complete set of pipe spanners from Cromwell Tools.

Thanks guys. Walked round the tool shop today and bought a small set of mole grips with the sharpest teeth I've seen. Also an 8mm closed type hex spanner. I'm going to cut a narrow slot myself, close the hex down to the slight undersize of many older unions... then reinforce the back of the hex (to the shaft) with weld. Should be handy for those annoying undersize ones.

I nearly picked up one of those grip wrenches while I was in the shop and will probably do so next time.
