Anyone tried fixing ZX Radio/Cassette?

Post by Jon »

Over the past few weeks, more and more bulbs have failed in the display of my ZX factory fit radio, so that only about 1/4 of it is illuminated. Now whatever lights the LED display has failed too, so changing stations is tricky!
Has anyone ever tried dismantling the unit and replacing these bulbs?
I am now doomed to listen to Sarah Kennedy and Terry Wogan until I fix it or obtain a better set!!

Or obtain a second hand one very cheap from a friendly forum member who has just removed hers to put in a flash Sony unit?
What about it Jon? I have the code for it. I don't forsee me using it again, apart from to fill up the hole in the dash if I ever sell the car. I did that with my AX and the guy whipped it straight out again to put his flashy unit in,so I don't think it's worth the bother.

Well, that could be the answer.Thanks.
The "set" in my deluxe ZX Aura is of the 4 speaker and autoreverse variety. Is yours this one or the 2 speaker no auto reverse poverty spec model?

As it's out of my no electric windows non-turbo poverty spec ZX, sniff, I guess so! You could always cannabalize it for parts if you fancy a weekend at the kitchen table with small springs and screws going PING!!!! and dissappearing forever behind the cats water bowl.
Yours for much cheapness!
BTW, my email is playing up, so if you want to mail me offlist, try fairfax.drummers@ecws.co.uk As it happens, I went right past the front door of Andyspares at the weekend when I was turning round avoiding the road closed due to floods barrier - have you fitted a snorkel to your Berlingo yet?

Over a number of weeks? That suggests that the bulbs are in parallel with a current limiting resistor in series. One bulb goes duff and then the others have all got more inrush current available and they die at an ever increasing rate. So good people, if a bulb does go in your stereo, fix it straight away. Maplins probably have a replacement but you will need to find out the correct type. If it is a common hassle, then your local car stereo repairer is likely to know the correct bulb for the type of stereo and if this can be found out, would any member who gets hold of the info please post it in the fixes section?

Thanks Alison,
Due to various commitments such as a trip to Snowdon this w/e I don't have time to look at the ZX and the radio just yet, too busy driving it.
Will be in Gt Missenden w/e of 1st Feb to do timing belt, service etc and will look at radio problem then, if so can collect yours if needed as not far away.

Sounds like a plan! I think I may be over in your neck of the woods (well, Newbury) that weekend, but lets discuss if and when...
