It does sound (no pun, as I haven't heard the vid!) like the cam or crank timing has slipped, hence no compression - this would mean no smoke as there is no heat if there is no compression. Might be a fair amount of smoke when it does start though, and dump all that unburnt diesel out of the exhaust :? The fact it went suddnely backs up some sort of mechanical failure. I do remember reading about someone with a BX Gti losing the cam woodruff key, and getting no comp. Luckily he got away with no bent valves!

if the vid becomes available, there is a knocking noise which i am sure is the fuel coming out of the injector union, certainly it didn't make that noise when all was closed up...

Thanks Rich

One further possibility is an oil pressure problem-leading to dry bores and no compression. This used to afflict Ford Kent engines left standing for a week or so, you'd try to start them and they'd spin like nothing was connected to the crank, and the reason was that the oil would drain out of the rings and bores, and there'd be no compression: in bad cases, you'd have to pour oil through the plug holes to get compression up enough for ignition and then the engine would run and the oilpump would prime and it would be fine.

Is there a possibility here that the oilpump drive may have sheared? Were this to happen there'd be no oil pressure and fuel injected into the cilinders could possibly just be finding it's way past the rings into the sump, rather than appearing as white smoke. Good compression relies on that film of oil at the rings, and if that's not there, then there's no bang.

Got it.. heard it!

That is turning over way too fast. If there was proper compression you would have a flat battery by now. And that tapping!!!

I would be looking at the woodruf key very soon.

if tapping has only started since undoing injector pipes, that is probably now air in the fuel system

They turn over way too fast when theyre not getting fuel, sounding just like a petrol engine with no spark plugs in it, did you get fuel spurting out when you loosened an injector pipe? did the solenoid click? my money is still on fuelling if the timing pins all fitted in the holes.

Sorry... my comment on the tapping wasn't supposed to add to the gloom!

I don't have any way to upload that video but it would be interesting for everyone to hear it.

The noise of it turning over is a lot like old petrol 16V Fords that would jack up their hyd lifters and spin over with little compression. Like a noisy sewing machine. I know that's not your issue though.

wasnt really spurting...

will have a better look again tonight and make sure on the solenoid.. will rip starter out to double check timing first...

no hang on Dave

the noise of it turning over and its speed of turning over IS the issue..

but there is no gloom, the car isnt mine and I am happy to throw it away, but just thought i would have a quick go at checking what happened to it.

its a shame as i brought it a brand new wing and got a £15 can of paint made up just before this... and its one of the last 405's with newer alloys full tank of diesel and CD changer etc.. silver estate roofbars, towbar... handy car

I can check fueling and normal stuff but I have never come across a TD doing this noise... But thanks to Stuart, it seems likely now that the fueling IS related.. also a suspect woodruff on cam. I now dont think it is anything but those two..

The tapping I dont think is related to anything, honestly ;)

um..

When my mates fuel pump failed a few months ago the car just stopped, no other symptoms at all (Xantia VSX Turbo D 201k miles), £30 quids worth of bosch fuel pump from the breakers and away it went.
