V6 Xantia Cruise Control

Post by DHallworth »

Ok, i bought a Series 2 V6 Xantia - another, 'er indoors going nuts!!

One of the faults on it is that the cruise control doesnt work.

Apart from the switch on the brake pedals (ah la XM Cruise Control) what should i be checking first of all?

Only other slight electrical fault is that it sometimes selects snow mode when moving off - again ideas appreciated.

Regards

David.

Check all wires leading back from the switch, especially any earth points, spray any connecting plugs with a Silicone Lubricant, and check any connections to pump or throttle. Sorry- cannot offer any assistance with regard to "snow mode"

Also the vacuum hose from the pump to the bellows can split. The snow mode thing sounds worrying....

The Cruise Control pump is behind the front bumper on the LH side.

You can get partial access it from the wheel arch by undoing the screws on the underside of the bumper, but it is probably easier the first time you work on it to completely remove the bumper.

The hose always splits just where it is pushed onto the spigot on the pump, because they have forced the hose onto a spigot that is too big for it.

Hi David

Did you manage to sort out the problem with your cruise control?

Well I don't know about him, but I fixed mine again on the weedend. This time I have fitted a short length of reinforced vacuum hose from another car so I know it won't split, with a joiner that does not stretch the original hose too much.

I have noticed that the cruise control on this car is quite slow to resume compared to other cars (about 3 or 4 seconds before it starts to pick up). Is this typical, or have I got a partial blockage somewhere?

It also shows up as an annoying dip in speed after overtaking. Lets say I have the cruise control set at 70 MPH, and then accelerate to 75 MPH to get past a slow vehicle, when I release the accelerator and coast to resume cruising, the speed actually drops to 65 MPH before the CC catches up and brings it back up to 70.

It also takes about a second to release using the stalk, but seems to release immediately using the brake pedal.

You could try adjusting the actuator on the bellows.

Prompted by this thread, I decided to pull the front bumper off of my Xantia V6 yesterday and sort out the cruise control, I quickly found the offending pipe and sorted the problem; I also removed the brake pedal switch and gave it a good clean with some switch cleaner.

The cruise control now works if I push the stalk upwards to the + positon, however pulling the stalk forwards to the ‘Set’ positon does nothing, if I pull the stalk forwards it still cancels the cruise control so the switch still works.

After reading a couple of threads posted by the previous owner of my car, I think that the actuator on the bellows has possibly been set up incorrectly. However, even though I can see how to adjust it, I can’t figure out how it should be properly set up.

Would anyone be able to shed some light on how the actuator should be set up, or what the problem might be?

Thanks for your help.

I'm confused by your reference to moving the column lever "forwards". I don't think that the cruise control on Xantias is different from that on XMs, and my lever has only three positions: Up, which engages cruise at the current speed, increases the selected speed, or reinstates the slected speed; down, which also engages the current speed or decreases the selected speed; backwards (towards the driver), which disengages the cruise control without erasing the remembered cruise speed.

That'll teach me to read the instructions in future, you're completely right, my cruise control was working perfectly and the problem was sitting in the driver's seat .

picked up my V6 Xantia yesterday, had a fiddle with the brake pedal switch on the way home, didnt make any difference,

so i just had a look at that pipe this morning.

Couldn't be bothered taking the front bumper off, so took the arch liner off, put the steering on a full lock n slid under it.

Found the pipe, cut the end off it, put it back on, cruise control works great!!

How stupidly tiny is that pipe for the spig on the thingy!!

Thanks for the advice guys!!!

That's known as a 'Fault 40' - ie a fault approximately 40cm from the 'malfunctioning' piece of equipment
