2.0 HDi 90 or 110BHP

Post by stevenlizuk »

Hello all,

I am thinking of buying a Xantia estate I have seen with the 2.0HDi engine in it. How does one tell (without seeing the engine number) if it's a 90 or a 110?

If it is a 90 can it be made into a 110 is it a different engine or just mapped differently.

My beloved 2.1 has gone to the scrappy in the sky in a mud/bend/banking incedent and I'm keen to replace it with something of similar grunt.

Also are the estates any more fault riddled than the saloons? This one is a 99 LX.

Cheers
Steve

The 110 has a turbo intercooler in front of the radiator - look for a large rubber pipe running front to back across the top of the engine (to the left of the air filter looking from the front of the car). As far as I'm aware the 90 doesn't have this.

As said: have a look under the bonnet. If there is only 1 air pipe going from the air box to the back of the engine it's a 90, if there is the pipe from the air box plus another next to it, it's a 110. The 110 is a better car - it has uprated brakes and shafts, better gear box, intercooler, different turbo - at least! You can chip a 90 to 110, but it will never BE a 110 - IYSWIM! However, if you do a lot of around town driving some prefer the 90 as it is shorter geared. If you do a lot of m-way or open road driving the 110 will give a more relaxed driver (2400 rpm at 70 mph), better economy - and lots more grunt for overtaking 8)

Hi Richard,

After having the 2.1 (chipped giving out 130) I don't think I could live with the 90 especially in a lumbering bus of an estate.
It will be the deciding factor in whether I get this car or not.
The "dealer" doesn't know what engine it is but I have the Autodata CD with the engine numbers on it to be certain anyway.

I need to modern up my knowledge a little.

Cheers

I'd say try before you buy. The wifes 405TD seems a lot perkier than my Xantia. As Richard said the gearbox and gearing are different. Any HDi can be costly IF it goes wrong.

Was stuck with my mum's 90 2.0HDi Xsara while I was fixing my Xantia after it's cambelt snapped at the end of last year.
I have to say it was a gutless as anything and I couldn't wait to get back into mine.

My previous Laguna II 90bhp dCi had a hell of a lot more oomph.

I think you will find that the 2.1 td will have all the power you need, without the added complications of a common rail engine, and will probably give you better economy that the 1.9. If looked after the 2.1s will go on almost forever, my last XM had covered 292k miles when I sold it and was still going well.

Last pic at the bottom, the hose on the right between the engine top cover & air filter box, this is the intercooler hose for the 110 bhp.The 90 bhp does`nt have this pipe or the intercooler. :)

Heres a 90 bhp without the intercooler & no extra pipe.
I have driven both 90 & 110 hdi`s in the 406 before i got my Dads car.The 90 was ok,but the 110 was much better.Quite a noticable difference with the extra power.I`m very pleased with the performance of mine, before AND after having it re mapped.
I would have the 110 anyday. :)
