Changing the passenger side door on a Xantia SX

Post by TehAgent »

A week on Tuesday, I will be getting another Xantia 1.9TD as a donor car for parts, My question is, how easy is it to change the passenger side doors over? and if anyone has done it, do you have a procedure to follow?

Also same question for the rear bumper?

Start working on the parts you want to discard anyway.
That will for sure save you a lot of swearing

Worst part is the electric wiring which must be undone before removing the door.
Before removing the door hingepins, mask off the surrounding paintwork with protective tape any kind to avoid scratches.
Support the open door on wooden blocks before it comes loose. Much easier to control then. When 1 hingepin is done replace it with a smaller diameter nail or wooden screw while working on pin 2. Adds even more to control the whole job.

If hingepoins are the double type (one smaller inside the outer), then remove the inner pin first. This will allow the outer pin to compress and move out much easier by tapping it out. Otherwise the job becomes a nuisance.

Donno on the rear bumper. Its usually held by bolts in small nylon blocks, hidden both upper and lower on the bumper.

Did a door swap on my VSX about a month back - took me about
45 minutes. The wiring doesn't have a convenient multiplug connection
point between the pillar and the actual door so you'll need to thread
its loom out of the door before its removal. You just need to be
thorough with the routing of the wiring - take plenty of digital piccies
as a reference!

Undo the check strap's two 10mm bolts that secure it and then you
can tackle the hingle pins - these are a doddle compared to any other
Citroën as they literally unthread - just make sure you get a direct firm
application of leverage on their heads with the torx drive on a compact
ratchet with a long extention. The door is manageable to handle on
your own when balancing/aligning it etc.

Rehang the new door next and thread the car's wiring carefully back
through the door making sure the routing doesn't run the wrong way
round the guide for the window!!

Hi

Make sure you have a B***** good quality TORX

Those hinge bolts can be VERY tight, with corrosion and pint to weld them together.. I've broken a FEW cheepies before now tring to remove a door or two!!

Good luck!

Guy I bought a set of doors from off an estate had a real bad time undoing
the bolts on his car; he managed to totally round the TORX drive on a couple
of the hinge pins and had to weld a nut on their tops to get leverage. I agree
with Citroenxm - get a damn good TORX bit and make sure it's got a good
grip with no chance of rounding anything. They usually aren't THAT tight but
as usual, the initial torque needs to be lessened and then they're almost
finger tight.

Incidentally, there appears to be NO REAL adjustment available!! I actually
didn't need to adjust the Xantia door I fitted the other day, pushed it shut
gently for it's first time on the car and it was 100%. The striker on the door
shut hasn't that much scope for movement anyhow - now there's consistent
tolerances on Citroen's part - same on the Xm too!

No adjustments needed at all.

As the hinges are welded to the car, How can you adjust them?

Then the hinges are also welded to the door to!! So how can you adjust welded joints..

I'm not sure if bolted hinges are better then welded, but they are a damm sight easy to remove, but you do have the fiddle of adjustment.

At least you dont need to adjust welded hinges!!!

What colour is the car and whereabouts are you - I'm always after straight
correct coloured panels for myself and a mate's collection of Xantiae!?

That is of course, if there are parts you want to sell!!

The rear bumper is a lot easier to remove than the front one - the access to
the bolts isn't brilliant but they seem to weather a lot better so don't turn in
their captives etc - once the fastenings are undone inside the tailgate
aperture there's one at the rear lower corner on each side accessible after
you've unclipped the rear wheelarch liners.

If I remember correctly, the rear bumper is fastened with 1 nut each side (accessible from the wheelarch), 2 torx screws on top (next to the rear lights), 1 nut by the towing eye bracket and two plastic plugs on the underside. Only the three nuts are not easily seen.

The BOL does have a pretty good description (12.7).

Haven't looked at the paint code, but its a dark navy blue, same as my car anyway, i know as iv had my car parked next to it for comparison as there is another blue, almost the same color but slightly darker.

I'm in Northampton, so middle of the country, the donor car runs and is coming with tax and mot, apparently there's something wrong with the rear hydraulics on it, the guy I'm getting it off has just had the front 3 spheres done and a new clutch cable, but hes not very mechanically minded and just wants shot of the car, an as iv been after parts for mine, is selling it to me cheap.

I'm going to give it a good once over when I get it, as there might not be that much wrong with it yet, But I'm preparing to have the passenger door, passenger side wing, and rear bumper off it, unless there's not a lot needs doing to the hydraulics, then I might just replace the drivers door on that one with the one on mine and keep that car and sell mine.

But what ever happens, ill have another xantia that will go up for sale, even if it is just spares or repair

The engine is good though, so if anyone needs a car for the engine, then in about a weeks time, I should have better details and pop them in the for sale part of the forum for people with plenty of photos
