Xantia Blower Fan Problems

Post by rickycitroen »

Hi

I have a problem with the Blower fan on my '99 Xantia HDi Exclusive.

The problem is that the fan runs at a fast speed (but not full) regardless of the control panel setting. The fun will not even turn off when the slider is moved to the position to the right of auto. The fan also runs when the engine is not running. However, I have noticed that when the air direction slider is moved to the 'demist' position the fan will run on full as it normally does on cold mornings.

I am unsure if the fault lies with the ignition switch or the control panel!

Thanks in advance

Richard.

Normally I would have said 'short circuit regulator transistors' but that usually results in the motor running flat out all the time, so it could be a fault in the control panel. I wouldn't rule out the motor control transistors though as they could have gone faulty but not completely s/c. The easiest course may be to try a secondhand motor first. Its not to difficult.

The fault lies with the bodgie.
The fan isn’t meant to spin with the ignition off.
Most Mk II’s turn on the air conditioning when you go to ‘demist’.

Thanks for the ideas guys. Motor is easy to check I would just change the trannies instead of getting a used motor.

Clogzz, what do you mean by 'bodgie'

Thanks.

That the supply to the fan motor has been modified in a way that it’s switched on even when the ignition is turned off.
The ignition switch is meant to turn the fan supply off.
The supply has been taken from another switch contact, or from an unswitched wire, possibly the cigarette lighter.
That’s a common modification when the ignition switch fails, but a relay must be put in the fan supply to turn it off with the key.

Hi

The supply to the blower has never been modified. It has worked perfectly since I bought the car at 18 months old, and ceased to work correctly last week!

The fan also runs when the engine is not running.
If the fan runs with the key set to ‘ignition’, but with the engine stopped, then there’s a control fault.
If it runs with the key set to ‘accessories’, then it’s a supply switching fault.
Your vintage of car had the relay modification put in at the factory.
Without subsequent modification, one possibility is that the relay would have fused itself shut.

Hi

The fan runs on accesories and ignition, and the speed is uncontrolable. I assume the relay is behind the steering shroud.

The RP No of the car is 10117 if that helps any

Thanks for the help

Not meant to run on accessories.
Early modification was a relay inside the shrouds.
Later, ‘formal’ modification was a relay (possibly grey) below the fuse board, item 10:

Haven’t yet been able to work out where from RP number.
Unless the relay is stuck shut, you should be able to hear it click on when going to ‘ignition’, after having made silence around you. :-$
Another relay there also clicks on at ignition.
If relay 10 is there, touching it will let you feel if it clicks on.
Otherwise, click sound from inside the shrouds.

Thanks for the info. I will take a look when I get a chance.

Silence is a little difficult at present due to the blower!

Re - blown transistors

Post by KennyW »

Hi Gang,

For your info I have just purchased PNP Darlington Transistor MJ11015 from RS limited £4-76 each.
Just waiting for their arrival then a bit of drilling and soldering and the blower will work at the various speeds.

Only have to finish sorting out the Air Con (another story)!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
