Hi, just read your problems with idle on your Xsara. My wife's car has developed the same problem :( I have already replaced the spark plugs and coil. No change! Only happens when cold. Did you get your car sorted, what was the problem and how much did it cost? Throtle cable not sticking.

Thanks

this may not help but here goes anyway :?

i had very similar problems with my now deceased vectra and had to spend many a weekend taking the idle control valve off and giving it a real good clean with carb cleaner

problems were very erratic idle anything form 0 - 3000 rpm mainly when engine warmed up sometimes would start and stall when cold when driving felt like accelerator was sticking changing gear a lottery as to wether it would rev high or stall

i found that leaving it soaking in carb cleaner (block holes) for 10-20 mins then scrape with small screwdriver was best way to clean it

one on vectra came apart in 2 sections and had rubber washer which if not seated let air in same as gasket on housing

main cause for carbon build up was the resurculation of exhaust gasses and oil fumes from rocker cover/breather pipes gave all these a good clean and ran fine until the good lady wrote it off

sorry its a bit of an essay but hopefully it may be of use

ps vauxhall made a mod to the breather system on later models to try and cure the problem

Having to take car to Independent Citroen Specialist. I have run out of ideas  Below is a note for the mechanic as the Mrs is taking her car there!

Citroen Xsara 1.4 Forte X Reg September 2000

The car was not used regularly between January and July (was running ok)

Since July the car starts fine when cold but once warm the tick over has become erratic ranging from 1500 – 3000 rpm. On pressing the accelerator the revs decrease and engine feels as if it is going to stall but picks up.

Over the last few days the engine now stalls and is very difficult to re-start and feels as if it is being starved o fuel or not running on cylinders.

The sparks plugs, coil and throttle sensor have been replaced and the idle stepper motor valve has been checked and cleaned by myself. On reconnecting the battery the car will run fine for about 30 mins on tick over before starting to play up again.”

Can you quote for a cam belt change for a Citroen Xantia series 2 Turbo Diesel 1.9SX 1998 R Reg please.

The cambelt change is for my car I don't feel confident doing it myself.
Thanks

Sorted

Post by andydykes »

Got the Xsara back today, faulty temperature sensors. The garage computer showing the reading of -40C I know summer isn't that bad. Anyway car runs fine just leaving the garage and someone reversed straight into the rear passenger door  Does anyone have or know of a good White rear Xsara door 2000 model.

Cheers

I agree on that one. If the engine doesn't know where the accelerator is, it can deliever fuel efficientely.
