Xantia ABS light....

Xantia ABS light....
I have an 'M' reg Xantia diesal and its just failed the mot as the ABS warning light stays on. Now, having read a bit i know that the ECU is a fault in these and my question is whether its worth getting another from a donor car..
What is the probability the the ECU is the likely cause? and if not, waht else could it be?

I agree with Andrew - but ECU can be repaired if it really is at fault. As they are prone to problems there is no reason that a second hand one will be any better than your own.

However you must test the sensors and associated wiring first - and if a sensor lead has gone you may be able to graft in a suitable bit of co-ax cable if you are handy with a soldering iron and insulation.

For the sensors and as Andrew says it will probabally be one, try this.
Ensure ignition is off.
Unplug the muliti plug from the ABS ECU.
Use an OHM meter to take these readings.
Pins No 15 and 30 = Left hand front sensor
Pins No 1 and 6 = Right hand front sensor
Pins No 19 and 28 = Left hand rear sensor
Pins No 29 and 31 = Right hand rear sensor.
All readings should be 1080 OHMS approx, in reality if you get no reading then the sensor is duff. But it is allways worth cleaning the connections.
If you shine a maglight at the pins you should be able to see the numbers of the pins.
Good Luck

I have identified an open circuit on front nearside (LH) sensor on my Xantia but have been unable to find where about the connector is between the wheel and the bottom of the ecu. Can anyone tell me where I should be looking - in the wheel arch, close to the ECU or somewhere inbetween?

The connections are buried down on the main lower crossmember towards
either end of the steering rack.
follow the feed wiring off the hub, through where it's held in a flat bracket
at the top point of the wheelarch with the usual severed brake wear sensor
lead, and it then drops down the rearward face to the main chassis - it'll be
about 5-6" in from the wheelarch's face. It runs through a small plastic Ω clip
and then you';ll see the multiplug with a spring clip.

Left side, facing out... (passenger side of the car if you drive on the left), also called nearside (n/s)... as Slim123 mentioned this is more common to fail... why? well my theroy is as it's nearer the side of the road where there are puddles and potholes, it will fail sooner than the other side.
Now I will feel silly if I am wrong now! Especially about the sides!

And the fact that on average, a car that drives on the left hand side of the road turns sharper on left corners than right corners - left hand outer CV joints tend to wear out sooner than right hand ones for the same reason...
