Saxo 3rd gear problem

My wife has found when changing down from 4th to 3rd gear the gearstick doesn't want to go to 3rd. However there is no problem going 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th.
Not being the trusting sort (I mean she refuses to acknowledge there is a 5th gear!) I went out in the car and she's right.
She first spotted it last Friday after being in 3rd gear and entering into a massive puddle.
Is this a coincidence?
What needs to be done - and is it expensive?

If it happened immediatly after going through the water it could be that some foriegn object is jammed in the gear linkage. I did this in my XM a few weeks ago and it pulled several pipes away from the floor!

The car has been in a body shop repairer and has come back with this problem fixed. So can only guess at what caused it ...

I did a similar thing in a saxo years ago. I ignored it and hoped it would go away, and after 2 or 3 months it did.
Guessing its water in the gearbox?
Was it expensive to fix?
