Xantia starting/fuel problem?

Post by SimonB »

Hi Experts
I have a 93 Xantia TD, (from new!) with 100k miles. I am having problems starting from cold. I suspect fuel problems cos I have changed the glo-plugs. I have noticed that the fuel filler allows air in when I fill with fuel. I presume because there is a fuel line blockage, but I can't find any info about the return line. Where is it and what causes the fuel tank to equalise atmospheric pressure?
Any other thoughts about starting probs?
Thanks in advance.

hmmm,
To check if the starting problem is indeed caused by air entering the fuel, have you tried pumping the diesel primer bulb a few times before attempting to start the car? If doing this improves matters, then yes, air is getting into the fuel system.
Common causes of this are perished injector leak off pipes (the rubber pipes that run between the 4 injectors), or sometimes the diesel primer bulb itself can develop minute cracks that draw air. Woth checking both of the above before proceeding further.

Almost certainly an air leak, the big problem is locating the leak ! try wiping heavy grease around any fuel line joints you can get at. I had the same problem last year with Charlotte and was eventually able to trace problem to cracks in both feed and return lines at the back of the engine, these two lines are "special" pipes and a dickens to get at and change - best left to a Citroen specialist. Only located fault by leaving engine running and seeing diesel oil spots on paper placed under car. hope this helps.
