Citroen Xantia Automatic gearbox Pressure regulation fault

Post by masood_ilyas »

Citroen Xantia, 1.9TD, Model 1999, Automatic, 136K miles.
The automatic gearbox on my Xantia has started playing up recently.
When cold it fails to progress smoothly through to the top gear. Sometimes it will "thump" and lock itself into safe "limp home" mode which is shown by two flashing lights on the instrument panel. Switching off the engine and restarting clears it and works fine thereafter untill next morning.
I had the faults read out by Cit Dealer which reported it as "1F Pressure Regulation". Has any one else come accross this before.
Memories of postings on another site reminds me of Solenoid and low hydraulic pressure faults. The stealers suggest a price of around £900 for replacing solenoids and refurbished unit for £1600. Clearly uneconomical.
My question is wether it is something that should be DIYable.
The tinkerer in me just wants to have a go at it if only there was some information available. I am unable to find any pdf document on the net showing stripping and restoring process. Every where I go it is the same message i.e take it to the dealer. Ironicaly I had renewed the gearbox oil (ESSO LT 7114) last summer just so it was well maintained but the higher viscosity of the new oil has thrown up a problem instead.!
Does any one have the info on these AL4 gearboxes please.
Any suggestions will be welcome. (apart from junk it!)
Thanks

Would the workshop manual help?

http://citroeny.cz/servis/servis.htm

4th item under Xantia.

Is the selector and its switches if any working correctly? My Father had this problem on a BW box in a Volvo - which confused the dealer's computer and everyuone else. Cured in fact by moving the lever from end to end of its travel many times!

Not as slow as the non turbo diesel auto which was available in 94.

For a second opinion, I can recommend http://www.ivanautos.co.uk/ in Potters Bar. They diagnosed and fixed a sticking hydralic valve in my Jaguar transmission for £130, including new fluid!

Thank you Jeremy, an excellent link, has loads of useful stuff.
Under Xantia has info about 4HP20 gearbox, mine alas is Al4 which has been used on some Peugots.

Thanks also to Xantia_V6 for your recommendation, I will be asking them for a Quote.

I'm a little confused by the AL4 designation of your transmission as most ZF's seem to have the designation HPO somewhere in their description:

BX - 4HP 14 (Strangely described by Haynes as 7HP 14)
Range Rover - 4HP 22
New 6 speed - 6HP 26
5 speed predecessor 5HP 24
Peugeot 505 - 4HP 22
Peugeot 405 - 4HP 14

Looks as though HP means hydraulic or something, first digit is the number of gears (did Haynes really find a 7 speed?) and the last 2 digits are the transmission type.

There are further model designations - Haynes describes BX transmission as being 2GX 03 and the ZX diesel as GZ 57 ( this is a 4 HP 14)

Citroen workshop manual for BX 4 HP 14 here - with loads of others (seems to be some GS info at start of PDF - ZF comes a little later)
