end of steering rod leakage

Post by wonderd »

Hello,
The vehicle is Xantia 96 2.0L 16V manual gear .
The problem is that at the end of the steering rod, close to the hidraulic connections, there is a leak.
It accures only when the car is turned off. sometimes i have a strange rattle coming from the steering wheel while turning.

Help please.

It's not really clear from your post where the leak is from. Do you mean it leaks:

Where the steering column goes into the steering rack?
Where the hydraulic pipes attach to the pinion valve (just under the steering column)?
Where the hydraulic pipes attach to the steering ram (on the back of the rack)?
The steering ram itself?
From the track rod ends (where they go inside the steering gaiters)?

It is unusal for a steering ram to leak only when NOT under pressure - are you sure it's not leaking from above somewhere?

Where the steering column goes into the steering rack, that is probobly the winning answer, a drawing is attached.

When the engine is turned on I don't see any oil drops falling so i assume the leak is stopped then.
