Hi,
I have done it on my old Xantia,
If you have a weekend to spare you can easily do it yourself.
All you need is patience, either some box spanners or long sockets and a haynes manual.
The Haynes manual is fairly accurate too.

Yeah, get stuck in. It's not a difficult job really, just very time consuming, and you have to be farily flexible to contort yourself around the cabin. My advice would be give yourself plenty of time, i.e. take a couple of days leave before or after the weekend if you rely on the car for daily transport, that way you wont feel rushed. Or if you can do without the car then take your time and do it over a couple of weekends. And take photos, it really helps the reassembly process.
It infuriates me to be wrong when I know I'm right

just recently done this on my 2.1td it's not difficult it just takes ages, took about 10 hours and i did it in a day, would probably be better to take your time and do it over a couple of days, to be honest i would think it would be difficult to find a garage that would do the job at a reasonable price just because of the time involved, why not give it a go there is plenty of help on here if you get stuck.

Hi All,
My TD Xant has just been put back on road due to clutch failure on my 16v Xant. The TD was off road for 4 months. If I had known that the car is colder than a well digger`s butt, I would have done matrix over that time.
They should make car designers work on their pet projects, see how they manage, perhaps then we would have cars one could work on. The heater matrix should be the most easily changed item on a heater, only thing to go wrong. Cables rarely break. Rant over.
So now I have 2 big jobs lined up. Happy days, :( :( :( :(

the makers do things like this intensionly as they know a lot of people will just scrap the car, when they given a quote to replace the matrix

i had a carlton and the heater matrix was next to the clutch pedal in the bottom of the centre console....teh idea being you could get it out by just removing the clutch pedal....

so manufacturers do choose to put a very vulnerable (almost service item) in the worse place possible

On the Xm, after a bit of practice doing these, I can change one in under an
hour! Mind, I find it easier when I disconnect items adjacent to the matrix,
like the WHOLE STEERING COLUMN...

Needs must!

In actual fact, the Xantia heater box which has the matrix in it's bowels,
looks like it's the first bit on the production line that the rest of the car has
been attached to - bit like a backbone chassis...!

Think to have seen that the dash is assembled outside, and then lowered through the windscreen opening before the screen is put in.
