Xantia ABS Sensor

Post by dogmeat »

Hi,
Thanks to searching this site I have determined that my ABS sensor F/R is faulty. I cant however find the break in wire to replace with anew one.
Has anyone fitted this before and if so know where the connector actually is.
All help appreciated.

Hi, the abs sensor is routed off the hub at the base of the strut leg with quite
a free amount of flex/play on the lead before it's attached to the wheelarch's
middle vertical face onto one of a pair of horseshoe shoulders (the other lead
also held is the pad wear sensor if it's still attached!!) . It's then fed
downwards at the rear of the arch's engine bay aperture to the main flat
chassis crossmember. It's actually jointed with a snap multiplug socket a few
inches along this crossmember and is held by an inverted Ω hook to locate it
inboard. It's mostly held in bespoke shoulders on the hub etc that the sensor
has corresponding donut rings to grip onto.

Sadly you'll get messed up but don't need to remove the wheel - just swing
some lock on the car! Obviously, you can make more of a go of it and make
things immesurably easier to access if you actually want to remove the
wheel!!

One other thing to note when you remove the sensor from the hub. There's
a shield that is held on with a nut first, once this is removed and the plate
slightly twisted out of the way a good idea would be a deep reach socked in
a 8 corner perfect hex to reomve the through bolt. The sensor thankfully
isn't embedded in the hub but is held in between tho shoiulders so will
actually come out!!

Final word, make 100% sure you've got the right shim washer thickness on
your replacement sensor as there's a deep inbedded brass collar that the
locating bolt runs through into the hub and there's a far thinner one too...

Of course you can shim out to the right thickness with washers if you've got
a 'thinner' sensor, but you'll have to get it right as the mm air gap needs to
be right on the driveshaft's castleated teeth!

The problem with your sensor could be a build up of oxidation on the connector plug where the ABS sensor plugs into the socket for the wire back to the ECU.

Jack up the front of the car, put it on axle stands and slide underneath.

You can trace the wiring and you'll find a 'weather' proof plug in the subframe. It should be easily accessible although you'll probably need to remove your undertray if fitted.

Pull the connector apart and give the contacts a clean then apply a smear of vaseline. This worked for me on two Xantias. Corrosion in these plug/sockets can cause ABS faulty sensor indications.

Hope this helps.

Will try the vaseline method before I open the box for the new sensor!

Many thanks all your advice
