And I'm pretty sure that the bottom end of the 2.1 was beefed up considerably with regard to the 1.9. The 2.1 has a remarkable record for longlivety - my own managed 530 000 km before a Volvo F12 put a rather large dent in the side and the insurance company wrote it off!

These are some of the differences:
XUD9 bore 83mm, XUD 11 bore 85mm, XUD9 stroke 88mm, XUD11 stroke 92mm. XUD9 piston pin 25mm, XUD11 pin 30mm, Main bearings are the same but thrustwashers are different. Timing belts are different.

All the XMs up until '96 used a mechanical pump, well at least all mine have! I did buy a engine from a later one and that had the electronic pump. There are quite a number of scrap early XMs about, I would think that you would be able to get a pump for not to much money and change it over.
The 1.9 and 2.1 blocks are similar but not identical. The 2.1 has the thermostat in the radiator return and is located at the back of the engine near the bottom at the cam belt end. I would agree that the 2.1 is a very good engine, the last XM I sold had covered 292 k miles and was still going.
The CX engine was a one off by Citroen and was very good for its time, it even had a cam belt! The 505 engine was, as allready mentioned, a successor to the XD88 engine used in the 404 and was rather agricultural compared with the Citroen. It was also used in the Granada and Sierra. I had a 404 diesel, a very comfortable car but you needed ear defenders to exceed 60 mph!

I think you would need the thermostat housing as well. I was looking at a 605 engine in a breakers today as I was thinking of changing my faulty electronic pump for a mechanical one. The cold start device on the lower front side of the pump looks like it is connected into the cooling circuit from the thermostat housing (on second thoughts it is not the thermostat housing but where the stat would be if it was a 1.9 engine )Peter.N. wrote:I would think that you would be able to get a pump for not to much money and change it over.
