Torque for the hub nut is supposed to be very high - 195 lb ft for a BX and higher for others - will the impact wrench go this high? I looked at 12 volt electric ones out of interest but think some only go to 130 lb ft which made it rather pointless.

Think so Malcolm - on the other page Kenny was asking if one would be easier than using a scaffold pole to get the hubnut undone.

Wouldn't advise on the ball joint as I've never done one !

Malcolm and other citroen buffs,

I was refering to the hub nut NOT the lower ball joint when I was talking about the impact wrench.

But your wise advise re the specialist tool breaking with the wrench is taken onboard.

I've seen a corded impact wrench which goes to 440Nm2

I'm going to my pal's garage to see what they have otherwise it will be the scaffolding pole trick which I've used in the past on other cars.

Hope I've clear the mud :!:

Cheers

Kenny.

i allways use a scaffold tube about 4 foot slid over a 2 foot knuckle bar to undo hub nuts, steady presure though no jercking it or they break, also if needed use it on the lower swivel,i never resort to heat on these, and only very seldom remove the hole hub

35mm - I asked this very question here recently myself as I'd lent mine to
my father and needed to buy one urgently to do a rush job!! 3/4" drive
on a 2' bar extension and a scaffold or jack handle tube does the job for me.

Fitting is the reversal ...
Meaning the torque needed is what you can do this way 8)

That's right! And on refitting, you always scrape a different knuckle to
the one that's bleeding profusely after item's removal!

Thanks Guys

Job done, Here are few thoughts for anybodys info.

I think the best way to remove the lower ball joint is by removing the hub carrier.I also removed the drop links for ease of refitting.
Placing the hub carrier in vice and gently apply heat to area surrounding the joint followed by some gentle tapping of surrounding area , then removing the joint with silston.
I refitted with special tool.

I spoke to a mechanic who specialises in Citroens (20yrs+) and removes hub carrier and then uses specialist tool with 35mm impact socket and impact wrench , success every time.

These are the originals and the car's done 180,000 miles and rising.

So thanks to everone who contributed
