Citroen steel

Post by KAD »

My Xantia is 9 years old and has 165000 miles on it and the
car is 100% rust free. If Citroens aren't galvenised it's as good as.
I don't know what they did to the metal, but in this area the
quality of construction is excellent. I chipped a bit of paint off the
rear of the sill 2 years ago and it is still shiny !! Do they go rusty
eventually??

Yes! I've noticed, or rather, not noticed any rust on any PSA car built after the mid eighties. Don't know what they do to them but they could teach Vauxhall and ford a thing or two.

I was given a brochure on the XM when it came out, not that I was a potential buyer @ around $A90,000 all those years ago, but it did mention a few things that may be of interest in this posting.
Showing a front wing in various colours, it describes its process from bare metal in stages:
1 - Steel galvanised on both sides. 2 - Electro-zinc plating. 3 - Primer coat. 4 - First coat of paint. 5 - Second coat of paint. 6 - Final clear lacquer coat.
On the entire body including guards, bumpers and all other internal & external panels, they colour coded a sketch of the body and described what each colour designated.
Steel electro zinc plated one side.
Steel electro-zinc plated on both sides.
Steel galvanised on both sides.
Anti-chip paint
Synthetic material.
Pulverised PVC
They apparently spent a kings ransome on setting up the factory to achieve this high standard and it is to be hoped that it paid off for them so as to encourage that standard of quality for the future. I would say it appears to have gone into later models. A far cry from some of the more mundane but still popular brands who seem to delight in making "Aspro" cars. (ie) Leave in water overnight & it's dissolved by morning.
Bit hard to describe in full but I trust is of some interest.

Hi everyone,
This is interesting, i noticed that too!! I used to have two old BX's, one was a 1986 model, the other was a 1987 model, but not one of them had any rust anywhere, i mean the sills and the wheel arches still had the original paint on them!! Very solid machines! I have to admit that i have never seen a rusty Citroen. I used to work at a Citroen dealer and i was once informed that Citroen cars do have a very high level of corrosion protection, see Alan's notes above. I believe that they have a 12 year warranty on the bodyshell now.
Take care everyone and keep it Citroen!! Rich.
