Noisy Input Shaft bearing MUCH BETTER

Post by davetd »

Morning

I have a noisy input shaft bearing (sound disappears when clutch pedal depressed). You can't hear it at 30-40mph plus but it's apparent around town at low speeds.

It seemed more noticable since I changed the left hand engine munting (attached to gear box).

Could it just be vibration

The cars now done 160k plus miles, so I guess the sound is to be accepted.

Do I need to change the bearing or do they just go on and on- I can live with the noise

If it is the input shaft bearing - it is kept wetted by the gear-oil from inside the box. Thus it can survive immense mileage still while noisy, provided the gearoil is checked and kept topped up.

The input shaft bearing will have a singing noise with a tune like Cher - while the clutch release bearing would be more like groaning - when they fail.

Thanks Anders :D

It just whirrs abit.

I have recently changed the oil in the box. Is it worth adding a gearbox treatment like molyslip ?

On a '93 I'd try any magic snake oil. Some of them does in fact work wonders & sheer miracles - but not always. You have nothing to lose.

Snake oil would be something like molyslip, slick or those things we all wonder if they'll do more harm than good.

Can anyone recommend a brand that they've had success with?

Nulon (Teflon based) is my favorite.
Quite a few others seems they had luck with Molyslip.

Dont worry on the function of syncromesh rings. They seems to work perfectly whatever you pour in the box - no matter what the besserwissers will try tell you.

When I was an apprentice engineer, various tests were run on lots of oil additives. In the test 9 ball bearings were placed in a bowl under a hydraulic press, then oil was added and the press ram lowered onto the balls under "X" pounds per square inch, at that stage they rotated the bowl until the balls started screaming and smoking!!... The best by far proved to be Molyslip, and from that day onward all pumps and compressors left the factory with some Molyslip in the sump oil. :)

Personaly I always add some with every oil change.. :)
