Block may well be different in that case - no way of telling besides a direct comparison as I'm sure the PR net won't list a raw casting - and of course a minor change means a new serial number.
I would expect a 1905 with the 3 valve head to produce about 100 BHP - a lot of work for 10 BHP.

1.9 td and 2.1td similarities

I echo the positive comments about the 2.1TD. IMHO it is a fabulous engine, being very refined, smooth and quiet and giving loads of torque, which enables a relaxed driving style and hence (for the size of the car) excellent fuel economy. No exaggerating, it will do a genuine 45 mpg (air con' off!) day to day running and over 50 mpg on a run driven sensibly at the speed limits. Some motoring pundits decry the sound of a diesel engine as being tractor like but I like the sound of diesels. Personal choice. Sure, you know the PSA 2.1 is a diesel at tickover but it certainly doesn't rattle like some BMWs, Volvos, VWs etc I've heard and at motorway speeds all you can hear is a distant hum. Brilliant!
Be careful!

That is a very good question Basically, the blocks are very similar and it just might go on. What does concern me is the 2.1 bore is 85mm compared to the 83mm of the 1.9TD. You may run the risk of the valves in the 2.1 head overhanging the fire ring of the 1.9 head gasket.Twiss wrote:Hello I know this thread is really old but did the question of fitting the 2.1 head to the 1.9 block ever get answered?
The cambelt tensioners are totally different, as is the RH engine mount and I'm not at all sure of the transferability of the 1.9TD mount to the 2.1 head. You cannot use the native 2.1 mount in a 1.9 as the inner wing on the 2.1 is totally different. This rules out the straight transplant of a 2.1TD engine into a 1.9TD
To all intents and purposes the 1.9TD and 2.1TD are entirely different cars.
My view is that the it might be possible but rather a lot of work and modification would be required and the end result is difficult to predict.
If you want a 2.1TD, I'd get hold oof a good 'un. They are excellent. A good VSX or Exclusive 2.1TD is about the best Xantia there is

If you're after a sedate car, or will be towing heavy loads, then go for the 2.1, if you want a rocket, stick with the 1.9
Comparing Jim's 2.1 (when I had it) with Cassy, the difference in performance was shocking.
While the 2.1 may be 110bhp, I don't know where it's hiding. Accellerating to 70 on the motorway seemed to take forever compared with a 1.9
Cassy has a higher top speed too, although now she's fitted with a 90bhp HDI gearbox that's dropped a bit (unless there's a tailwind or going downhill).
I know the leading opinion is that the 2.1 is the better of the two engines, and maybe with a bosch pump and in an XM that's the case, but I really did not get on with it.
It's a shire horse where as the 1.9 is an Appaloosa

Above all surely, the big difference in weight....?yes the 1.9/2.1 engines do mount in the same place, and the2.1 i work on dose have a hydraulic clutch, but i find mos of the 1.9 ZXs i have driven seem to be a bit flat as opposed to BX and xantias with the 1.9D,so i think the gear ratio must be diferant, not only that you might find the speedo drive ratio is wrong for the xantia

I like the 2.1 too, it's an absolute joy to drive, and surprisingly cheap to run for the amount of power you get over the 1.9td. I would say the differences of the 2.1 over the 1.9 are too much to just swap the heads/blocks etc. It's a much more superior engine compared to the 1.9td.
If you are thinking of putting the 2.1td in a ZX, nice idea not sure if it would be feasable.
Just tune the ZX 1.9td.... some twaeking of the pump and turbo tweaks etc and it may keep up with the Xantia 2.1. But a tuned up Xantia 2.1td would be quicker, and so much nicer than a ZX.
As for the weight difference, it wouldn't slow it down, but the front would be heavier, so it affect the handling (maybe in a positive way, who knows). You'd also need to uprate the suspension (springs etc) to accomodate the extra weight of the 2.1td engine.
Best bet is to go out and buy a Xantia 2.1td. It's a cracker.
