Refurbishing Brake Calipers.

Post by KennyW »

Hi Gang,

I think I have a sticky brake caliper as I'm getting a slight judder when braking lightly.

I've replaced all 4 discs front and rear recently and the pads. Also cleaned up the front and rear of the calipers where they connect to the hubs.

AS a result of a brake caliper bolt shearing one day ( another story) due the alignment changing with a build up of oxidise aluminium alloy.

Vehicle details on my signature.

Any thoughts would be greatfully appreciated.

Cheers

Kenny

I wouldn't have though a sticky calliper would have caused juddering; pulling to one side, yes.

I'm assuming the disc mounting surfaces were spotlessly clean when you replaced the discs, and they were decent quality discs as well. It only takes the smallest amount of muck anywhere to send the discs out of true. I have had new "no-name" discs which didn't run true (I was in a hurry...).

Quick test would be to take the wheel(s) off,and spin the disc; a small amount of runout can usually been seen with naked eye, especially when it has something fixed to compare with (like the calliper/pads); usually you can visibly see the mfrs recommended runout, especyally with new discs.

I agree... the caliper couldn't cause "judder", it must be something to do with the pad or disc surfaces...

Thanks Phil and Simon,

I've only noticed this since returning from hols in France , there were no problems then but a thought  .

Could the high temps in France, allied to the windy roads where I was staying cause problem with the discs :?:

They were a brand make.

Also I snapped a drop link on hols but during an inspection I noticed 1 of the lower ball joint rubbers was badly damaged. Could this be a possible cause :?:

Cheers

If the balljoint is worn, then this can induce juddering on braking...as it amplifies any minute discrepancy multiple times.
