Ticking noise-Xantia 1.9 TDVSX (93L)

Post by SHEMAR »

<img src=icon_smile_question.gif border=0 align=middle> There is a ticking noise coming from the engine, which I first thought may have been tappets, but on closer checking now think the noise may be from the hydraulic pump.
Charlotte has covered 114,000 miles, has been well maintained and inspected, hydraflushed twice, all spheres changed within the last 30,000 miles and oiled exclusively with Millers XFE since 50,000 miles. Before I spend all my pocket money on a new pump can anyone share any thoughts they may have on my diagnosis, there is no apparent lack of performance in the suspension system, any tests that can be performed? Appreciate the wealth of experience I have seen over the last few months, and Merry christmas to all

Are you sure the clicking noise isn't all down to a weak accumulator sphere? When was it last changed?

Put your hand on the regulator, see if you can feel aswell as hear the tick, if you can then its most likely the accumulator sphere gone dead.
Can you say what the frequency of the tick is.
Further check is to stop the engine and loosen the pressure release screw on the regulator half a turn (do not remove it), if the accumulator sphere is good you will hear a hissing sound for two to three seconds, if the sphere is flat there will be very little hissing sound heard if any at all.
The hissing sound is caused by the high pressure oil being released, allowing it to return to the reservoir.
A flat accumulator sphere by the way is a potential danger, because there is no back up for the front brakes and litle back up for the rear brakes.

Accumulator sphere was changed about a year ago (20,000 miles), its noise was quite different to this "ticking", it was more of a "click", and I was told that if the click occured more frequently than about once/min I could be pretty sure the sphere was on the fritz. This proved to be correct, its replacement clicked only about once every 2/3 minutes, and the front susupension stopped hunting.
The ticking I now have is intermittent (would'nt you know), and engine speed related, may not be present all the time, but is more likely to appear if engined rpm is raised to about 2,000.
