ZX td turbo boost.

Post by Peter.N. »

I drove my wifes car today, not a common occurance, but I noticed the the maximum boost doesnt come on until about 2,500 rpm and then it flies but at 2,000 rpm its gutless, is this normal?

My XM starts to pull strongly from about 1,800 rpm.

Yes Peter....Thats just like mine,my ZX TD just hangs around upto 2.5k then hold onto your seat.

Around the net there seems to be a few mods around pressure and boost to improve low rev pickup but i'm going for reliabilty and max MPG so not making any changes.
Life feels good just as you complete No4 Glow Plug on a ZX-TD

Thanks for the replies folks. It just seems a bit odd to me, most of these engines produce maximum torque a around 2,000 rpm which usually coincides with max turbo boost, why not on this one? Our BX TZD estate used to accelerate much faster than the ZX and it was only a 1700 engine. She is quite happy with the performance as it is, I just wondered if there was something wrong with it, but evidently not. But it doesn't pull like my XM...

Maybe the wieght of them or the fact that not many heavy cars came with teh 1.8t ;)

Id say you could maybe see about the injection and how much fuel is going in before then as it may just not be pushing enough fuel in. Our 2.1 pulls like hell from 17/1800 but our old TD was kinda the same but nearer to 2k(rev counter was bust for nearly 100k so i never knew lol)

KP - I think you may be right about the fueling because you cant make it smoke however hard you push it, but its strange that it suddenly goes at 2.5 k. Sounds like the 'off booost' supply is a bit lean. I will have a look, hope its got a Bosch pump! :?

All the 1.9TD's ive driven start bringing the turbo in at around 2500rpm and the max torque is designed to be at 3500rpm (though some derivatives have there max torque a little lower), certainly all the rolling road print outs i've seen peak at around 3500rpm

Personally i find this a bit better for cruising on motorways, in a 1.7td by the time your getting to the upper end of the clock the turbo has run out of poke, and if you need to get out of the way quickly then your left short!

The 1.7td (on both the BX and the 405) spool up to max boost much quicker and accelerate quicker than the 1.9td, but they just dont seem so comfortable in the upper half of the rev range.

Doesn't sound at all un normal to me!

OK thanks vanny and all. Seems this engine is set up to behave like a petrol, its just not what I am used to, having run a string of CXs and XMs I am acustomed to low speed grunt, but of course the larger engines have the torque to be able to pull higher gearing so you still have plenty of power at overtaking speeds. The ZX sort of set up just doesn't suit my style of driving, in the XM I rarely exceed 2000 rpm except on the motorway and there 70 mph comes up at about 2400. But you have answered my question. - Thanks.
