Can anybody remember Peter.N posting about replacing his transistors on the internal fan of a Xantia.
Looks like my fan is running intermittently as described on other threads.
Cheers

I had an intermittent fan and this was down to the ignition switch rather than the fan resistors. The ignition switch problem is due to the full current running through the switch and burning the contacts. The solution is to add a relay to use the ignition as the low current tripping only. I guess it depends upon whether you get irregular speeds or on/off symptoms.

Hi Kenny,
And we’re back into the troublesome fans.
The interior fan may have worn brushes.
A firm wallop may fix it for a while.
As per mezuk’s post, if the rear demister doesn’t work when the fan stops, it’s almost certain to be the ignition switch.

Hi Guys,
Re the ignition fault my Xantia is a mark which has been modified by Citroen with a relay.
I believe its the transistor as the fan works intermittently at all speeds and the demister is working.
Cheers
Kenny.
P.S. PeterN is was trying to find your original posting about drilling etc.

THANKS FOR ALL THE REPLIES,
I've just been looking at the BOL and the wiring diagram shows a relay.
I also looked at the Citroen-PR.net site and it lists a relay for the heater blower.
Does anyone have the 'revue technique' manual and possibly can check it to see what it says
Going to check Car shortly
Any replies will be cheerfully received.

Hi Team,
Checked the car yesterday and today, can confirm my xantia has a relay
35Amp ,12 V 4 pin relay which is situated at the rear of the fuses in the dash.
Took out the internal heater blower and stripped it partially down . Suprisingly easy for a citroen .
I've gave it quick check and there is no sign of any rusting or melting of wiring etc. But there are 2 ,I'm Guessing Bushes, which rub against the revolving cylinder which I think is made of copper or copper alloy. This cylinder has a lot of wound copper.
I think these are the same bushes Alan S talks about in his thread on the Air Con section.
I'm going to get my daughters digital camera and take some photos and try and post same
Any thoughts once again gratefully received.
Cheers

Hi Kenny,
And yes, they are the ‘brushes’, rubbing against the ‘commutator’, to take the current to the spinning coils.
They wear down in time, and cause intermittent operation, or permanent stop of the motor.
They can be bought from auto electricians, if not identical, something that can be filed down to size.
Alan’s topic that I’ve got in mind deals with replacing the brushes on the radiator cooling fans.
No ‘Revue Technique’, and a look at “Planète Citroën Forum’ didn’t show anything of use for now.
What you may try as a stopgap is to stretch the brush springs to increase their reach.
That’s if they aren’t too low and risk damaging the commutator.
Enjoy a good fiddle,
Terry.

Thanks Terry,
As I've said in the past your a fountain of knowledge
I'm hoping tomorrow (Monday) I'll get bushes from a company that recons
alternators and other electrical motors and fix same.
For your Info Terry the cooling fans worked fine in France but still got compressor problem.
Hope you resolved your problem
Cheers
