1.9d to 1.9dt conversion with no ECU

Post by karlsdispatch »

Hi

I have a 98 dispatch 1.9d (XU eng) which needs a new head, bottom is ok. I also have a 98 Xantia 1.9td (XU eng) which has a damaged bottom end but a good head and turbo. However, in comparison, the dispatch 1.9d has a simple engine, ie no ECU and masses of electrics. What I want to do is use the head and turbo from the xantia and run it on the dispatched 1.9d bottom end. In principal it should work and the logic behind a turbo is very simple. Has anyone ever run a turbo on a NA D engine before? What were the results?

Many Thanks

Karl

It can certainly be done in principle - the earlier TDs had no ECU - but I believe that the TD bottom end was strengthened, so it's a bit risky if you intend to use the extra performance.
Have you consulted your insurers, though? Most are very touchy about such conversions these days, as they're an unknown quantity as far as they are concerned, and will sting you if they agree to insure you at all.

You won't be able to - there will be no oil feed or return for the turbo on the block. Shouldn't be too hard to find another 1.9D engine to fit - or even a TD unit as mentioned - but talk to the insurers first - they dislike engine swaps!

Hi

Engine swaps with me and the insurers are no probs as ive put MI16's into 205's and RS turbo lumps into Orions so shouldnt have a problem. Im certain that the 1.9d block will still have, but blanked, the oil feed holes available? If not could I source it elsewhere? or make up my own from a small resorvoir, a oil cooler and a 12v pump?

If this is the only issue I should be ok? Does anyone know though if a d runs the same standard compression as a td, or is this changed by using a different head gasket?

Many Thanks

the TD engine was built to stand the added torbo torque.

Just as the autobox wouldn't take the turbo, neither will the UD bottom end for very long.. I think an XUD head is the way to go...

Simple is best, lmho.. :P :)

Just had a look in my Haynes manual and the non turbo compression ratio is 23:1 turbo is 21.8:1, cant see any other spec diffs other than that. Would have thought they would use the same block and just have the oil way capped off, you might have the change the sump if the turbo returns its oil direct.
Good luck and let us know how you get on.

I thought the Turbos had extra oild jets to cool the underside of the pistons, or was this just very early XUD engines ?

There are lots more differences than the compression ratio. Haynes cant be bothered as they never thought their manuals as engine reference manuals with all sorts of spec's listed.
