Does anybody out there know how to bleed this beast? I have located bleed screws on a pipe beside the fuel heater with a small white screw in it. this bleeds well. I guess that it is the thermostat by pass There is a black one on the radiator and this is free and bleeding. Try as i might, I cannot get the heater to go. Is there another bleed screw somewhere?

I have only had luck with the final trapped air by running with the expansion cap off until warm, and the thermostat opens. Then replacing the cap while it cools, then removing once more...

Ensure that the heater is turned to hot inside the car.
Down the back of the head you will find a metal pipe that runs parallel with the head, there should be a bleed screw in this pipe. Remove this bleed screw. Top up coolant until it flows through the bleed hole. Replace the screw. Then do the same with the bleed at the thermostat housing.
With the rad cap off, start the engine.Open the bleed at the back of the block slightly so coolant flows, then re tighten, again the same with the bleed at the thermostat housing. Leave the engine running with the rad cap off to purge any air. If all is OK the fans should cut in before the coolant boils over to prove all is OK. The heater should now be roasting hot!!

If this is ZX with a 1.9td, then there are three bleed screws.
First you must have a container that fits the expansion filler neck snugly ie: a plastic container with some masking tape around its screwed cap neck in a tapered fashion, so that you can lightly push the container into the expansion filler without any water leaking when filled. Then height of the container should be approx 100mm higher than the system in including all three bleed screws.
One bleed screw is on top of the rad on the R/H looking at the engine, another is to right of the fuel filter/thermostat and the heater bleed is at rear L/H of the engine compartment on the end of hose like a blanking screw.
You can bleed all points, keeping the water level high. You can do this later again when the engine is warm, but be warned!!! if you are not careful you can get burn't with hot water if you fumble with the screws ( water system will be under pressure of approx 14lbs ).
The ZX has no heater valve, so it does'nt matter whether its turned on or not. The heater is controlled by flaps directing the air flow as required.

Sooty,
Confusion starting here, just realised we don't know WHAT CAR we are giving "bleeding" advice on. I am on about a BX (Subject header bleeding coolant TGD 1.9) as the only TGD I could think of was a BX 19D! So thats why I was on about the metal pipe down the back of the block etc etc. You think its a ZX TD in which case your post is then perfectly valid.
Maybe Tom would like to come forward and identify his car!!!!

Thanks for your help guys. The animal in question is a BX. I didn't find the bleed screw behind the head. Mine appears not to have a third bleed screw so I slackened the pipe from the metal pipe at the rear of the engine, (gearbox end) and bled the car several times. A run gave me some heat but this morning, the level was down about 2 litres. Further examination showed a bit of muck jamming the vacuum valve on the (new) rad cap open which may go some way towards explaining the problem but I am a little concerned because the heater takes a long time to warm up and is then very dependent on engine speed- 70 on a motorway, roasting. Town traffic, much cooler.
