Xsara VTS brake issue

Post by alan s »

On the recently purchased 2002 VTS I noticed that at speeds of 110kph+ that if I were to hit the brakes in a normal manner, the pedal would bounce under my foot. I know what ABS feels like as I've also got a BX16V as well as a Xantia VSX and it's not that, but if I "stab" the pedal and really hit it with some pressure almost as though I was doing a semi emergency stop, the pedal feels as smooth as silk; it's just that doing that in a VTS at those speeds could result in an unexpected visitor in the boot, particularly if the following vehicle was a truck.
My initial theory is that it may just be that we have a caliper partially sticking and that when a sudden reasonably hard pressure is exerted, this may just snap it free enough to operate normally, whereas under normal operation, only one side is making contact with the rotor.
Apart from the other thought of rotor run out, anyone got any theories either agreeing or otherwise with those theories?
