TU3JP Question

Post by rossnunn »

The ZX has a slight misfire on tick over & upto about 2 ~ 2.5K.
I personally think its overfueling, but I'm wondering if you guys have any ideas that I could try.
It has brand new plugs & runs a known good coil pack. The engine is a 1.4 Multipoint with the squared inlet manifold. The fuel rail was originally a ingle input one that I changed for one with a inlet & return, the latter being controlled by a vaccume valve.
I have read I'm sure that there is something on the inlet side that sticks or is prone to sticking??
When I initally got the engine stated, like a spanner I forgot to open the thermostat bleed valve > remembered every other one. & consiquently it over heated, in as much that the warning light came on. When I opened the valve, you can imagine it was like a small steam train & there were some ominus creaks & clonks from the engine. I've yet to do a compression check to see if I've buggered anything but it uses no oil or water & doesn't smoke at all. The engine also sounds sweet & revs freely.

So there you go thats the history, whats your ideas folks

Is it a regular misfire - i.e. it seems to be the same cylinder that misses now & then ?
This is most likely down to a faulty ignition lead/plug.

Or is it the general miss of a beat now & then (engine seems to hop a bit).
This is most likely to be an air leak in the manifold/throttle housing. Any place AFTER the sensors & injector. Could also be the dreaded MAP sensor teasing up.

mmm well it seems to be a regular cycle like it has a beat to it if you see what I mean.
I disconnected each plug but the throttle housing & they didn't seem to make much difference except one which made the revs run high but I didn't leave it running long enough to see if the mis had gone.
The engine doesn't use igintion leads as it has a coil pack directly above the plugs - same idea as the 16v Xantias

Ahh - the separate coils unit then.

try the map sensor and the air leak problem.
If that does not help you are left with the ignition problem.

BYW : is it a new problem right after plug replacement ?

I can't say.
I bought the engine as tested & running & serviced it before fitment.

On the bottom of the throttle housing ("carburettor"). Its a sensor look-a-like.
Earlier types are small squarish units with separate small dia hosing connected - a MAF (manifold air flow) sensor. Barely matcbox size - but matchbox shaped black plastic units.

Both types gunk up with oil from the intake air - which also have the sump vent hoses attached.

right a little update,

I have removed, dismanteled, cleaned & rebuilt all the bits surrounding the butterfly & its still the same.
I have added some more fuel - always check the obvious & its still the same.
I have found that if I remove the oil filler cap I get quite a draught out of there but if I put my hand over it I get some vaccume.
Any suggestions?

Hi Malcolm,

Yes I did think that but have checked everything & it seems to be fine.
Do these SL ECU's remap themselves? I thinking it might beed a run to get the mapping set again.
