C5 Servicing

Post by mooseshaver »

My C5 will hit 5 years next year. Does anyone know if I can get away with waiting untill I hit the milage limit for having the suspension serviced or is it best to get it doen at 5 years?
Thanks

Isn't it just a fluid change? I guess it will be cheap enough!

Check the ends of the car to see how floaty the spheres are, if they are ok then thats nothing to worry about.

Check the colour and condition of the LHM (how long was the last change?), or it may be worth just changing and cleaning filters for good measure.

General inspection of pipes and such things should be enough if you dont have any symptoms.

I've not seen the LHM. As far as I know its never been changed as its not supposed to need servicing for five years or I think 150 000miles. If I pull one of the covers off in the engine bay I can see a place to top up fluid for power steering, but the words suggest I shouldn't open it. Think it was something about decontamination?
If it is just a fluid change then that can't be to expensive. Getting Married next year and don't really want to be buying lots of spheres.

C5's don't use LHM. The hydraulic system uses LDS which is supposed to have a life span of five years. It's not quite as straightforward to change as LHM is on BX and Xantias. The reservoir is under pressure.

Gents, the LDS isn't under pressure! How many times i've topped up the "steering" reservoir :P!

On the new generation Cits, the LDS fluid needs changing every 5 years. I've only looked at it from a distant perspective on mine, but it doesn't seem to be difficult to remove the reservoir and empty it to change the LDS.
The filters, if i'm not mistaken, are built in the pump/acc. assembly, but any that are on the outside of it can be cleaned as regular filters.
To top up the reservoir, fill it up with LDS until it reaches the small opening on the big filler filter.

Hi rod -

how would you flush the system ?
There is no other way than lowering the suspension to have as much fluid returned to reservoir as possible. Then replace the fluid. You get at least a 95% new and fresh fluid in the system this way.

Bit like changing the engine oil. There will always be some old oil left in the engine.

Perhaps it is under pressure when the engine is running as it's shared with the PAS pump, but for all the times i've openned mine up to top up the fluid after switching the spheres at the front, i haven't heard even a smal hiss out of it. As long as the car is lowered and let alone for 5 minutes, the system will depressurize itself.
My record for changing the front spheres, from the moment i instruct the system to minimum height to citaerobics, is 10 minutes.

c5hdi servicing

Post by rod »

:D
thanks anders, will do that when time to change,
i am going to top up the eolys tank next week (i hope)
will post result when done.
still running sweet as a nut.
p s had the top off the lds tank to check level.
no problem experienced, perhaps it is only under pressure when the engine is running.
re particle filter.i am trying the haynes manual for a pug 406, from the library.
it appears to be the same engine and exhaust as the c5.
will let you all know when checked
