I've used Slick 50 on worn Cit boxes before with excellent results.
It may not help if the synchromesh has gone, but it's worth a try.

Guess you don't know if the clutch has been done or is due soon as you could get a good second hand gearbox now to keep spare until it's needed...

I've never tried it myself, but have heard great things about Molyslip from a few pals who run old Cits.

The problem with adding 'slippery' additives is that they make the oil more slippery, which is of course what they are for, but if your synchro is worn the last thing you want to do is reduce the friction because it will make it worse. You really need something like sawdust or sand.  Only kidding, only kidding, please dont sue me!

The problem will be worn slip rings on the 3rd gear cog.

These slip rings are made from alloy and have been well known to wear out in the BX and Xantia gearboxes.

Putting in slick 50 aint gonna put metal back on !!!!!

But you cab strip a Xantia gearbox without removing the gearbox from the car.

I have replaced a few of these in the past on BX and Xantia's. You remove the N/S front wheel, drain the gearbox and strip off the 5th gear casing, then remove 5th gear with the selector forks. Aftre this is out of the way, you can undo the alloy outer casing and completly strip the gear trains and remove them from the box, without touching the clutch.

It's a bit fiddly the first time, but after a few it can be done in about 4-5 hrs

Silly point - is the clutch braking near the floor - if it is it may be possible to adjust it properly so that it breaks a bit higher up - and this may allow the synchromesh to work properly!

This is often a problem when a new clutch has been fitted and clutch fitters seem to take pride in never adjusting cables - and seem to try to leave the clutch just breaking when the pedal is pushed hard into the floor.

clutch

Post by MATTT »

not had a new clutch but i will double check its bite point
ive found if you hold the clutch in slightly longer and allow the revs to drop its usually ok
if not slim you fancy a job for the afternoon one weekend :)

MATTT,
I'd try some Moly Slip first, before paying out for expensive repairs or a replacement gearbox.

I have a slightly notchy gearbox on my Xsara & I used some moly slip, has improved a small amount. Cost me around £5 from Ebay. What car do you own?

its a xantia turbo diesel
i was thinking of trying some new oil but as its only the 1 gear it does it in
spoke to ppl and a few replies on here so i dont think it will make any diff adding slick 50 either
its one of those things you can kind of drive around its worse trying to change down into 3rd then its always crunches
weird really as the car has only done 76k gen mileage with 2 owners and it was my dads friend who had t since it was a couple of yrs old

maybe its a weak point on these

Next cheapest solution is to check/top-up the gearbox oil level.

have had this prob on various cars can be the gearbox mount, where there is play it affects the throw of the gearstick and it always seems to be 1st 3rd or 5th. I've got it on my Xantia at the moment, just cured it on my wifes golf.

Try adjusting clutch cable. Ideal height for pedal is 150mm from rest to fully depressed.

Although giving a bit more clutch clearance may improve it, if its only on third its a worn synchro ring and theres not much you can do about it short of taking the gearbox apart.
