My Dad barely revs his rover 420 SDI beyond 2.5k and it always billows soot when i go back home and drive it. I try not to nail it if somebody is driving behind me as the soot cloud is BIG. I'm try to convince him that the occasional 'Italian tune-up' is good for the engine, but he doesn't seem to be listening (even though he's half Eye-tie).

Take it out and drive it like you've hired it!!

Thanks for all your advice here...Well its finaly through the test......

Serviced the car not due but done anyway...Used injector cleaner in the fuel and drove the car to the station like an HIRE Car as suggested.

Well from an emissions failure of 4.35 should be 3.00 to a pass of 1.26 :D

Done 128k in this ZX now

Cheers everyone........

When I had my Escort TD it was capable of drawing black lines on the road with the exhaust. My mate advised me to take it for the test on a cold, damp day (which isn't hard to do around here) as well as all the usual servicing/thrashing stuff. For the first MOT (in my ownership) it was on the high side of a pass but the figure halfed the next year and halfed again the year after that.

My mate is a self employed mechanic and people often report that their cars, both petrol and diesel, go much better after he's had them. Sometimes he hasn't even serviced the car, just driven it from his workshop to his house a couple of times. In the days when cars routinely burned oil he even had showers of burning soot out of exhausts on occasion.
